‘Biodegradable’ is certainly the buzzword of the moment. We’ve seen everything from biodegradable diapers to biodegradable dinnerware to biodegradable baby wipes flood the market recently, and for good reason. Making the switch to biodegradable, plant-based alternatives to plastic everyday products is a crucial step on our journey to protecting the planet for the next generation.
After all, using just 20 wipes a day for the first three years of our babies’ lives adds up to a massive 22000 in total. If those 22000 wipes are biodegradable and not plastic, that one small change can make a huge difference.
While it’s great that there are so many biodegradable baby wipes on the market now, many parents and carers are hesitant to use them, thinking they might not be as effective as regular disposables.
But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
There are some seriously soft, durable, and, best of all, non-toxic, biodegradable baby wipes on the market, waiting to make eco-parenting simple.

Are biodegradable wipes better?
Yes. Biodegradable wipes are heaps better than regular disposable wipes. That’s because regular wipes are predominantly made with plastics, but biodegradable wipes are plant-based. It won’t come as any surprise that plastic takes hundreds of years to break down. Plant-based, biodegradable wipes, on the other hand, can break down in as little as a few months.
Biodegradable wipes will often find themselves in landfill sites, just like plastic ones, but they’ll still break down easier than plastic will. It’s even better if your biodegradable wipes are compostable. You can compost the non-poopy ones with your veggie scraps!
But while biodegradable wipes are certainly the better choice when it comes to disposables, the best option when it comes to protecting our planet is undoubtedly cloth wipes. Cloth wipes, or reusable baby wipes, do what they say on the tin – they work in the same way as disposables, but instead of heading straight to the trash after one use, they can be washed and used again.

What is better: biodegradable or compostable?
Not all biodegradable wipes are compostable. Biodegradable wipes that aren’t compostable should be thrown away like regular disposables. But they should, given the right conditions, break down within a matter of months. This will all depend on where they end up in landfills, though. They’ll need air and sunlight to break down, and this can’t be guaranteed!
Biodegradable wipes which are also compostable are even better. They can be disposed of either at home in a compost heap or using a commercial compost service. This means they don’t have to be thrown straight in the trash, although it’s worth remembering that you can’t compost poopy wipes.
Biodegradable vs flushable baby wipes?
Apart from a handful of brands that claim to offer flushable baby wipes, you should never put baby wipes in the toilet. Even plant-based, biodegradable wipes should never be flushed; they could lead to blockages. Biodegradable wipes need air to break down, so the sewer is certainly not the best place for them!
Brands like Natracare offer wipes which are safe to flush – that’s because they’re made of paper, and not plastic, cotton, or bamboo.
How long do biodegradable wipes take to decompose?
How long biodegradable wipes take to decompose will depend on the wipe itself and its components, as well as where the wipe ends up after it’s been used. Compostable wipes which are disposed of in a compost heap at home or using a commercial service can break down in as little as a couple of months. Aleva Naturals tells us their wipes can break down in just 21 days!
Biodegradable wipes which are thrown in the trash, on the other hand, can take months to years. It really depends on how much light and air the wipes are exposed to, which can never be guaranteed.
The best wipes for protecting our planet are therefore compostable wipes. Disposing of these wipes in a compost heap at home is the easiest and best way to help break the wipes down.
But biodegradable wipes are undoubtedly better than plastic wipes, given that it takes hundreds of years for plastics to decompose.

Their plant-based wipes feature chamomile and aloe to soothe the skin, and their water-based wipes were developed especially for eczema-prone skin. Both their water and plant-based wipes are completely free of plastic and made in Britain.

Healthynest is fast becoming one of my favorite natural baby brands. Their wipes are soft on your baby’s skin, thick, to handle big messes easily, and completely biodegradable. Made with FSC-certified cotton fibers, they’re even EWG-verified. That means that they completely avoid potentially harmful toxins, the company is transparent about their ingredients and the brand follows safe manufacturing practices.
The only downside is that it doesn’t look like they’re compostable.

There aren’t many reviews available of Healthynest wipes as they’re pretty new to the market, but the few that are available are glowing. With some brands, it feels like you need to use a whole pack to clear up poop explosions, but not with Healthynest, they say.

Mum & You’s wipes are dermatologically tested and suitable for babies with sensitive and eczema-prone skin. They’re completely cruelty-free and vegan. In fact, they’re even Vegan Society and Leaping Bunny approved.
These impressive wipes are fragrance-free, soft, and strong and claim to be ‘good as new’ 3 months after opening. We all know how frustrating it is to open a pack of wipes, lose the tab top keeping them closed, and have them all dry out in a week. So this is great news.

The bottom line
Ok, I’m in love. Mum & You wipes tick all the boxes and impress at every turn. The fact that they can decompose in as little as 15 days, even when sent to landfill, is just amazing. And add the completely recyclable packaging, and the fact that they’re vegan and cruelty-free, and the wonderful reviews, and you’re on to a winner.

They’re completely biodegradable and compostable.
Joonya wipes are Dermatest certified, as well as cruelty-free and vegan. They’ve won too many to list here, but all you need to know is, it’s a lot.

What you do with your biodegradable wipes after using them really depends on what you used them for, and whether they’re compostable. Compostable wipes like Offspring, Natracare, and Mum & You can be composted at home with fruit and veggie scraps, provided they’ve not been used to clean poop! Or, they can be composted using a commercial facility.
If you’ve used your compostable wipes to clean poop, the excess poop should be flushed down the toilet before it’s thrown in the trash. Not many people know that we should be removing excess poop from wipes and diapers before getting rid of them, but if we don’t, we’re potentially putting human health at risk. 🡆 What to do with biodegradable, non-compostable wipes
If your wipes are biodegradable, but not compostable, like Healthynest and Joonya, they need to be thrown in the trash. Again, if they were used to clean pee or food, they’re fine to go straight in the trash, but excess poop should always be removed from wipes before throwing them away.
2. Can biodegradable wipes be flushed?
In a word, no.
You shouldn’t put any wipes in the toilet unless it explicitly states on the pack that they’re flushable. Very few brands offer flushable wipes, like these from Natracare.
You can’t flush biodegradable wipes because this could lead to blockages. They need air in order to decompose, so it’s important that they’re either composted – if they’re compostable – or thrown in the trash.
3. Are Huggies wipes biodegradable?
Unfortunately, no. Huggies wipes aren’t biodegradable. They offer a few different varieties, including fragrances free, special delivery, and natural care. None of these varieties are biodegradable or compostable. It looks like they do offer a biodegradable variety in the UK, but these aren’t available in the US right now.
4. Are Aldi’s baby wipes biodegradable?
If you’ve never been to Aldi before, you’re missing out. This German supermarket chain offers everything from great value organic produce to budget baby buys, and everything in-between. Their Little Journey wipes are hypoallergenic and made from 99% water. But it doesn’t look like they’re biodegradable, unfortunately. And neither are their Little Journey Sensitive wipes. They do offer biodegradable wipes in the UK and Europe, so let’s hope the US gets them soon too!

5. Are Honest baby wipes biodegradable?
Honest was founded by none other than A-lister Jessica Alba. Her non-toxic, plant-based diapers have gained a cult following. So how do Honest wipes stack up?
It looks like Honest wipes are hypoallergenic, free of harsh chemicals, and extra thick for the messiest of messes. On the brand website, it says that their baby wipes are 100% plant-based. Does that mean they are biodegradable? I emailed the company to find out the truth. Meanwile, I did my own research and found out that Honest Baby wipes are made of rayon, a plant-based material that does not decompose in a “reasonable short time”. So, Honest wipes are not biodegradable.

6. Are Seventh Generation Baby wipes biodegradable?
Seventh Generation might be one of the best-known ‘eco’ brands on the market, but I was underwhelmed by their diapers. It seems like Seventh Generation wipes aren’t that dissimilar. They’re hypoallergenic and free from some potentially harmful toxins like fragrances and parabens, but they’re not completely plant-based. What I like is that the Seventh Generation tells us exactly what the soft wipe material is made of. It contains wood pulp, polyethylene, and polypropylene. The last two ingredients are oil-derived materials, so obviously, their baby wipes are not biodegradable.
I think it’s time that Seventh Generation offers the truly eco-friendly products that its marketing suggests! Greenwashing is rife in the industry, and it’s so easy to assume wipes and other products are biodegradable or ‘eco-friendly’ with the use of buzzwords like ‘natural’, ‘organic’ and ‘plant-based’. But unless a company states explicitly that a product is biodegradable, it’s safe to assume it’s not.

What can I use instead of disposable baby wipes?
Biodegradable wipes are much better than regular plastic ones. Biodegradable and compostable wipes are better still. But what about the alternatives? Reusable or cloth wipes are a great choice for parents looking to make eco-conscious choices. And don’t let the cleaning put you off – it’s simpler than you think!
While you’ll spend a little more initially buying plenty of disposable wipes, they’re much better for your wallet in the long run. Unlike disposable wipes, you only have to buy them once!
