The best overnight diapers for tummy sleepers, 2022: The secret to stopping leaks

Our little ones are all unique… even when it comes to how they sleep!

While it’s recommended that babies sleep on their backs during the first months of their lives, many little ones – no matter how much we try to keep them on their backs – prefer sleeping on their tummies.

And tummy sleeping comes with its own set of problems, including middle-of-the-night leaks.

So many parents and carers of little ones who sleep on their front face this issue. This is because the thickest and most absorbent part of the diaper is usually towards the back and not the front, and all that wriggling at night means the diaper has to work extra hard to keep pees at bay.

That can result in wet tummies and sheets in the morning, or worse, in the middle of the night.

So if your little one prefers to sleep on their tummy, what’s the best diaper?

You won’t find any diapers that market themselves as ‘tummy sleeper friendly’, but superior absorbency and a great fit are key to a good night’s sleep for little ones who sleep on their front. Diapers designed specifically for overnights are your best bet, for sure.

Let’s take a look at the best diapers for tummy sleepers in 2022 and some tips and tricks to keep your tummy sleeper dry all night long.

1. Hello Bello Nighttime Diapers
best plant-based nighttime diapers for Tummy Sleepers

Hello Bello diapers have gathered quite a cult following. These skin-healthy diapers were created by A-lister Kristen Bell and her husband, who wanted to provide safe diapers at a good price.

Their non-toxic diaper offerings are proving increasingly popular with parents and carers across the country. And, luckily for us, they produce nighttime diapers too…

Specifically designed to prevent leaks, the brand explains that they use the same materials (some of which are plant-based) in their nighttime diapers as they use in their regular diapers, but their nighttime diapers feature increased absorbency. Both varieties are hypoallergenic, and not the fake kind of hypoallerenic… truly hypoallergenic.

That means that they’re completely free of fragrances, lotions, phthalates and latex. This is great news because these unnecessary toxins can irritate our little ones’ skin and cause other health issues.

The diapers are also completely free of chlorine, which doesn’t necessarily pose a direct health risk, but it’s terrible for the environment.

a box of Parents Choice Overnight diapers

Parent’s Choice is the diaper brand offered by Walmart, and trusted by many parents and carers across the country. Alongside their regular offering, Walmart produces Parent’s Choice overnight diapers.

Let’s take a closer look.

Walmart’s overnight diapers offer up to 12 hours of protection and promise to be soft and comfortable for your little one. They have a JustRight fit guide, which helps to show you when it’s time for the next size up, and they’re free of latex.

They’re also free of lotions and fragrances, which is great. But there’s no word on phthalates, so I have to assume they’re used.

Compared to some other overnight diapers on the market, Walmart’s Parents Choice overnight diapers are super budget-friendly. The fact that they’re also free of fragrances, lotions, and latex is quite good, especially for the money.

The Good

  • Up to 12 hours of protection
  • Size guide
  • Extra soft
  • Free of latex, fragrances and lotions
  • Made in the USA
  • Cruelty free

The Bad

  • No eco credentials

The bottom line

If you’re looking for super budget-friendly overnight diapers for your tummy sleepers, you can’t get much cheaper than Parent’s Choice by Walmart. It’s great that they’re free of fragrances and lotions, but it’s a shame that they’re not clearer on the use of phthalates.

5. Huggies Overnites
the number 1 selling overnight diaper in the US

It’s no surprise that Huggies Overnites are the number 1 selling overnight diaper in the US.

Let’s take a look at why!

These nighttime diapers offer up to 12 hours of protection, are made with extra absorbency to keep little ones dry and are soft to boot.

They feature a wetness indicator to let you know when your little one needs to be changed, as well as Double Grip Strips for a great fit. They’re free of elemental chlorine, fragrances and lotions. There’s no information on phthalates, though, or any attempt to use plant-based materials.

The Good

  • Extra absorbent
  • Up to 12 hours of dryness
  • Extra soft
  • Free of lotions and fragrances

The Bad

  • They probably contain phthalates
  • No effort to use plant-based materials

The price of Huggies Overnites is a little higher than some others on the market, including Parent’s Choice.

The bottom line

There’s no doubt that Huggies are effective – there’s a reason why they’re the number 1 selling diaper brand in the US – but they’re not the best of the bunch.

Brands like Hello Bello and Honest use some plant-based materials and steer clear of phthalates, and they’re a similar price.

If you need effective diapers on a budget, Parent’s Choice is the way to go. Plus, they’re free of phthalates, fragrances and lotions.

6. Pampers Swaddlers Overnights

Like Huggies, Pampers are popular for a reason. There’s no doubting their effectiveness, but how do Swaddlers Overnights stack up against others on the market?

Like Huggies Overnites, Pampers Swaddlers Overnights say they’ll keep your little one dry for up to 12 hours and are up to 100% leakproof. You could argue the same for any diaper, of course!

Their superior absorbency and softness makes them great for nighttime. But while Pampers says this diaper variety is hypoallergenic, it can’t be. We know that Pampers uses fragrances and lotions in its diapers, as they state this openly. And they may use phthalates too.

These toxins are potentially harmful to the skin, and the use of ‘hypoallergenic’ is not regulated by the FDA. So it’s always worth treading carefully with Pampers.

The price of Pampers Swaddlers Overnights is where I’d expect it to be. It’s not the cheapest, and is on par with Huggies Overnites.

You can certainly get cheaper, with the likes of Parent’s Choice overnight diapers.

The Good

  • Effective
  • Up to 12 hours of leak protection and dryness
  • Free of parabens and latex

The Bad

  • Not hypoallergenic, as they claim
  • They contain fragrances and lotions
  • They might contain phthalates
  • No effort to be eco-conscious

The bottom line

There’s no doubt that Pampers diapers are effective. But when you compare them with other overnight diapers on the market, you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere.

Brands like Hello Bello and Honest offer non-toxic diapers that use some plant-based materials at a similar price. It’s a no-brainer, really.

How do I stop diapers from leaking at night if my baby sleeps on her tummy?

Apart from getting the right diaper, there are a few tricks and tips that will help your little one to sleep well, and sleep dry, on their tummy.

  • Size up
One of the first tips to try is sizing up. Diapers which are too small will nearly always leak. If your little one is in-between sizes, try the next size up and see if that helps to keep them dry overnight.

  • Try Sposie booster diaper doubler
Booster pads like these from Sposie help to keep your little one dry, and are great for overnights. Simply pop one inside your baby’s diaper, and they’ll provide an extra layer of absorbency. Plus, they’re free of phthalates, chlorine, latex and fragrances, so they’re gentle on our babies’ sensitive skin.
  • Buy overnight diaper instead of regular diaper
If you’re still using regular diapers overnight and experiencing leaks, it’s definitely worth switching to specially-designed overnight diapers.

Overnight diapers are designed to be more absorbent and secure, so they’re especially good for roly-poly tummy sleepers!

There are loads of great overnight diapers on the market for all budgets, and it’s easy to find non-toxic ones too. Parent’s Choice are free of fragrances, lotions and phthalates and are super budget-friendly. Brands like Hello Bello and Seventh Generation are a little more expensive, but worth it if you can stretch to it; they use some plant-based materials and steer clear of harsh toxins.
  • Try a different brand
Sometimes, a diaper that works for one baby won’t work for another. All our little ones are unique and it can be a case of trial and error when it comes to keeping your baby dry overnight.

If you’re sure you’ve got the right size and you’re using an overnight diaper, give another brand a go.
  • Make sure the diaper is secure

This sounds like an obvious one, but if the diaper isn’t secure enough around your baby’s tummy, it’s likely to leak. You don’t want it to be too tight, of course, but making sure it’s not too loose is also important.

You should be able to run two fingers comfortably around the waist of the diaper.

It’s also important to make sure the leg cuffs/guards are pointing outwards, to safeguard against leaks at the legs.

Can you double up diapers at night?

A baby wearing two diapers isn’t a comfy baby. Diapers aren’t designed to be doubled up, and any extra absorbency you gain won’t matter when your baby is uncomfortable.

It’s much better to make sure you have the right overnight diaper for your baby at the right size. If all else fails, try sizing up or popping in a Sposie pad

Your little one will be doing anything but sleeping if they’re wearing multiple bulky diapers! And that means so sleep for parents and carers, either…

Conclusion: Do overnight diapers really work for tummy sleepers?

Our little ones are amazing. They have their own quirks and qualities from birth, and it’s amazing to see these develop as they grow!

One quirk you might be familiar with is tummy sleeping, which comes with its own set of (leaky) challenges.

If your little one prefers to sleep on their front – when they’re old enough to do so, of course – it’s important to get the right diaper. And that diaper should be one specifically designed for overnights.

While you won’t find any diapers that market themselves as ‘tummy sleeper friendly’, overnight diapers are designed to be extra soft and absorbent, to ensure our little ones are comfortable and dry – for up to 12 hours in many cases.

So what’s the best overnight diaper for tummy sleepers?

My favorites are brands like Hello Bello, Honest and Seventh Generation. Each of these brands offers effective overnight diapers. And, as added bonuses, they’re free of harsh toxins and use some plant-based materials.

So you can sleep soundly, knowing they’ll be kept comfortable and dry, and their diaper is doing its bit for the world.

And let’s hope your little one does too…
