What to Look For in the Best Overnight Diapers for Heavy Wetters

  1. How it fits your child

It goes without saying that, if your baby’s overnight diaper doesn’t fit them properly, you’re heading for trouble. A snug and comfortable fit will minimize the risk of leaks, not to mention that it’s a lot nicer for your baby. Diapers are available in lots of different sizes, so it may be a case of trial and error, but you’re sure to find a fit that suits your little one.

  1. Comfort

Comfort goes hand in hand with a fit, really. Part of ensuring your baby stays comfortable overnight is making sure you buy the correct size. Similarly, we’ve all seen diapers that look and feel more like plastic bags than something we should be putting on baby’s skin, so it’s important to find diapers made from soft, plant-based (if possible) materials, to minimize the risk of itching, soreness and diaper rash. This is especially important if your little one has sensitive skin.

  1. Absorbency & Leak Protection

While some diapers may use all the right buzzwords – plant-based, hypoallergenic, organic – it’s just as important, especially with heavy wetters, that the diaper is absorbent and will protect your little one from very, very unwanted leaks. Most diapers will use SAP – super absorbent polymer – a safe-for-your-baby material that wicks away moisture and helps to keep baby dry. Bamboo is also very en vogue right now in the diaper world, as it’s plant-based, sustainable, biodegradable and incredibly absorbent.

  1. Gentle

While you need a diaper that’s absorbent and protects against leaks, this shouldn’t mean it uses a list of materials longer than the constitution, none of which look familiar to you. Gentle, soft, hypoallergenic and plant-based diapers that aren’t very absorbent are (mostly) a thing of the past. There are loads of options when it comes to effective overnight diapers that aren’t filled with potentially toxic chemicals and materials like phthalates, petroleum-derived plastics, dyes, and irritants.

  1. Cost

Cost is, of course, a very important factor when choosing an overnight diaper. Most of us will have a budget to stick to, so the price per diaper is pretty crucial when choosing the right brand. The price of diapers, as you probably already know, can vary wildly, so it’s important to compare brands when searching for the right one.

If you buy online, the company will usually calculate the price per diaper for you, to make it much easier to make the right choice. Luckily, with so many options on the market, it’s easier than ever to find effective, absorbent overnight diapers that won’t break the bank. You already have a little one to do that for you!

  1. Material

If you’ve done any research at all into the materials used in different diaper brands, you’ll know that some materials and ingredients used to sound more like chemistry lab essentials than something you’d put on the baby’s skin. Certainly, with very cheap brands, you’re more likely to come across added lotions, dyes, irritants, phthalates and plastics that are potentially harmful and uncomfortable for your little one. These are more likely to cause allergic reactions and affect babies with sensitive skin, causing irritation and diaper rash

Looking for a brand that uses as many plant-based materials as possible, along with no dyes, lotions or fragrances, will minimize the risk of allergies and diaper rash. If your baby has particularly sensitive skin, look for diapers labeled hypoallergenic, as these are more likely to protect your baby’s skin. If a company describes using colorants, this could mean dyes or pigments, which sometimes contain heavy metals. These can easily irritate your baby’s skin, or cause diaper rash.

  1. Sizing

Not all brands will make diapers in the correct size for your baby. Check that the brand you like the look of produce packs in the size your little one needs, as some are geared towards smaller babies and others towards older babies and toddlers.

  1. Sustainability

As I’ve already mentioned, sustainability isn’t just a positive thing for the planet; finding a diaper that uses eco-friendly, plant-based materials are likely to be soft on your baby’s skin, while doing something awesome for the environment. As we all know, plastics take up to 1,000 years to break down, whereas alternative plant-based materials like bamboo are often biodegradable. And not only are materials like bamboo friendlier to the planet, but completely non-toxic (unlike some plastics used to make diapers) and softer on your little one.

How to change a nighttime diaper

Nighttime diapers are used and changed in the same way as regular diapers. They should hold more liquid – in theory – than regular diapers, to keep your little one comfortable, and allow them (and you) to sleep well. Like regular disposable diapers, they’ll often feature a wetness indicator to prevent you from changing unnecessarily.

Best Overnight Diapers for Heavy Wetters Review 2022

1.The Honest Company Overnight Diapers — Best Sensitive Skin Diaper for Heavy Wetter

The Honest Company is becoming very well known for its use of some eco-friendly materials, secure fit and seriously cute prints. Not only do they produce regular diapers, but they offer super-absorbent overnight diapers, which feature advanced leak protection, softness for baby’s skin, comfort and a secure fit. Not only that, but they’re great for babies with sensitive skin, as they’re hypoallergenic.

They say that their overnight diapers feature ‘ultra-thin core technology with faster absorption’. This means that they have up to 20% more capacity for liquid than regular diapers, to ensure the baby can sleep comfortably. And to make them extra secure when it comes to leaks, they have moisture barrier cuffs, made to deal with the leakiest of leaks and the worst blowouts.

It’s safe to say that they’re effective, but another bonus about the Honest diapers is that they’re made with fluff pulp harvested from forests that are managed sustainably, and they don’t have any bleach, artificial fragrances, latex or lotions.

The Honest Company Overnight Diapers are available in sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6. The price will vary depending on the sizes, but, as an example, their size 4 pack contains 96 diapers and, at around 44 bucks, that works out as around 42 cents per diaper*. This is similar to other overnight diapers on the market, but you can get cheaper brands. Having said that, the designs on the Honest Company diapers make the price worth it! They average 4.5 out of 5 in over 60 reviews, and reviewers say they prevent leaks effectively, are good for babies with sensitive skin and are super soft.

◆ They do contain petroleum-derived plastics

The bottom line

The Honest Company overnight diapers are a great choice for leak-protection and sensitive skin. They’re available in a range of sizes and users seem to love them!

2. Seventh Generation Baby Free And Clear Overnight DiapersBest Natural Overnight diaper for Heavy Wetters

Like the Honest Company, Seventh Generation are known for their gentle-on-baby’s-skin products for little ones, which are also made with sustainable materials. Their Free and Clear Overnight Diapers are the company’s most absorbent diaper, with a premium, super-absorbent core.

They steer clear of chlorine bleaching chemicals, which are terrible for the environment, fragrances, phthalates, and lotions when making their diapers and are made with chlorine-free wood fluff pulp. They’re not biodegradable, so not the best on the market for the environment, but will certainly suit babies with sensitive skin.

Available in sizes 4, 5, 6, their size 4 pack contains 96 diapers and is available for around 40 dollars, which is about 42 cents per diaper – the same as the Honest Company. Again, not out of the ordinary pricewise for overnight diapers, but you can find cheaper. But, they do have similarly cute designs, which might sway your opinion a little…

They average 4.2 out of 5 stars in just under 700 reviews. Some brands have a higher rating when it comes to reviews, but some of them are still glowing, with users loving their secure fit and lack of chemicals.

The GoodThe Bad
◆ Free from artificial fragrances and lotions
◆ Totally Chlorine Free

◆ Made with sustainable materials
◆ Super absorbent core
◆ Free from fragrances and lotions
◆ Good for sensitive skin
◆ Cute designs
◆ The reviews aren’t quite as good on average as some other diaper brands
◆ The price isn’t out of the ordinary, but you can find cheaper diapers
◆ They are NOT free of petroleum-derived plastics
◆ They do not state if they are free of phthalates

The bottom line

These Seventh Generation Overnight Diapers are great for little ones with sensitive skin, and with their super-absorbent core, they’re sure to protect your baby. They’re not quite as highly rated as some other brands, but it’s definitely worth giving them a go.

3. GroVia O.N.E Reusable Baby Cloth DiaperBest Cloth Diaper for Heavy Wetters

For moms, dads and carers who want their babies to be comfortable overnight while saving the world, this GroVia O.N.E reusable cloth diaper is the one. Excuse the pun.

There’s no denying that reusable cloth diapers are one of the best options when it comes to eco-friendly diapers, for pretty obvious reasons: they can be used again and again! And they’re becoming increasingly popular, as they’re not just great for the environment, but great for your bank balance, too. Rather than buying packs of diapers regularly, with cloth diapers, you need to invest in a few products, which should see you through from birth to potty training if you care for them properly.

This GroVia O.N.E diaper comes with everything you need to get started with cloth diapering, which, admittedly, can be a bit of a minefield to new users. But they’re surprisingly easy to master, and this one is a great diaper to start with. It’s super-absorbent, so great for heavy wetters and wearing overnight, and features two closure options: hook and loop (for a no-hassle fit) and snap closure.

With many different closure options, this diaper will see your little one through from birth to potty training or 10lbs to 35+lbs. Not bad for a single diaper!

It’s made from polyester microfiber, cotton, polyester microfleece, and water-resistant polyester, all of which make for a soft-on-the-skin product, which is, of course, machine washable.

The GroVia diaper is available in a variety of colorful designs, with prices varying (depending on the design) from about 22 to 27 dollars per diaper. This may seem like a lot, but spending 100-150 dollars on a set of diapers that can be reused throughout your little one’s infancy makes a lot more sense than spending around 1400+ dollars on disposable diapers from birth to potty training.

And just because they’re environmentally friendly doesn’t mean they’re not effective. They average 4.4 stars out of 5 in over 60 customer reviews, with users saying they’re great for overnight as they’re super absorbent, they’re soft and how (surprisingly) easy they are to clean.

The GoodThe Bad
Free of artificial fragrance, dyes, and lotions
◆ Free of phthalates
◆ Totally Chlorine Free
◆ Free of petroleum-derived plastics

◆ Great for the environment
◆ Great for your wallet
◆ They have good reviews
◆ Super absorbent
◆ Will fit newborns to toddlers
◆ The fit can be easily adjusted
◆ Produced in a variety of designs
◆ Two closure options
◆ Cloth diapers can take some getting used to
◆ They’re arguably not as convenient as disposable diapers

The bottom line

For an effective diaper that’ll have you feeling like Greta Thunberg after every use, these GroVia O.N.E diapers are a fantastic option. Not only do they minimize waste, but they’ll keep your baby dry overnight, whilst saving you a heck of a lot of money.

4. Huggies OverNites Diapers — Best for Heavy Wetters

Huggies is, of course, one of the best-selling diaper brands in the US, and worldwide. The company says that their OverNites Diapers are the number 1 selling nighttime diaper, which should speak volumes about their effectiveness.

These Huggies diapers promise up to 12 hours of protection as their most absorbent diaper. They feature a dry touch liner, which absorbs wetness, and helps to keep baby dry overnight, a snug fit waistband and double grip strips to ensure no leakage, and a wetness indicator to take the guesswork out of changing. The diapers are, to quote the company, ‘dreamy’ soft, and they do all of this without the use of chlorine bleaching, latex or added fragrances.

Huggies overnights are available in sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6 and vary in price depending on the size, from around 30 cents per diaper for size 3 to 51 cents per diaper for size 6. 51 cents per product is quite a lot more than some other brands, but they’ve got the reviews to back up their prices; they average 4.5 stars out of 5 in more than 8,000 (yep, 8,000!) reviews. To say they’re tried and tested is an understatement. Users love how soft and absorbent they are and others say they’re perfect for heavy wetters.

The GoodThe Bad
◆ Tried and tested
◆ They have great reviews
◆ Huggies’ most absorbent diaper
◆ Up to 12 hours of protection
◆ Dry touch liner absorbs wetness
◆ Soft on the skin
◆ Hypoallergenic
◆ No chlorine bleaching, latex or fragrances
◆ The snug fit waistband and double grip strips prevent leaks
◆ Some sizes are a little more expensive than other brands
◆ They don’t boast any eco-credentials
◆ They are Elementally Chlorine Free NOT Totally Chlorine Free
◆ Not free of petroleum-derived plastics
◆ Printed with colorants
◆ They do not state if they are free of phthalates

◆ While they say they’re hypoallergenic, they’re not necessarily great for baby’s with sensitive skin

The bottom line

We’ve all heard of Huggies as a brand, which, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the right product for you and your baby, but they’ve certainly been tried and tested. They’re clearly effective, but don’t talk about their impact on the environment, or their efforts to become more eco-friendly. Plus, considering that Huggies use plastic and chemicals that haven’t necessarily been studied in any depth, it’s perhaps best to avoid them if your little one has sensitive skin.

5. Pampers Swaddlers Overnights — Best overnight diapers for easy changing

If you’ve not heard of Pampers… of course you’ve heard of Pampers. One of the largest diaper brands in the world, it’s not surprising that they produce overnight disposable diapers in a range of sizes. These overnights are, as the company says, ‘blankie soft’, allow air to reach baby’s skin, which keeps them comfortable and dry for up to 12 hours and are hypoallergenic, so great for babies with sensitive skin. They’re also free from parabens and latex and feature a wetness indicator, so you know exactly when your little one needs a change.

Pampers make their Swaddlers Overnights in sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6 they range from around 37 cents per diaper (size 3) to 58 cents per diaper (size 6). So some of the larger sizes work out a little more expensive than other brands…

The one thing missing from Pampers Swaddlers is any kind of eco-credentials. At no point do they discuss the materials used to make the diapers, and how they’re trying to minimize their impact on the environment as a company. So if you’re looking for overnights that are kind to the environment, these are perhaps not the ones for you…

The thing that they do have is great reviews: 4.6 out of 5 on average in over 1900 ratings. Users say that they’re very absorbent, prevent leaks and are good for little ones with sensitive skin.

The GoodThe Bad
◆ Absorbent
◆ Great reviews
◆ Soft on the skin
◆ Hypoallergenic, so good for sensitive skin
◆ Free from parabens and latex
◆ They feature a wetness indicator
◆ They don’t list the ingredients used or discuss eco-credentials
◆ Features dyes and fragrances ‘at a low level’
◆ Some sizes are higher priced than competitors
◆ They are Elementally Chlorine Free NOT Totally Chlorine Free
◆ Not free of petroleum-derived plastics
They could include phthalates, which could be harmful to the baby

The bottom line

These Swaddlers Overnights clearly do the job well, and with a wetness indicator, you won’t be changing them unnecessarily. But if you’re looking for diapers made with plant-based materials that are better for the planet, you might want to look elsewhere.

6. Luvs Ultra LeakguardsBest overnight diapers for leak protection

Luvs Ultra Leakguards certainly have the right name, but they do live up to it? They feature ‘night lock plus’, which means they’re super absorbent and able to lock away wetness, even with heavy wetters. The company says they’re super soft on baby’s skin, have a wide fastening area to make changing easier and feature a leak-barrier on the legs to prevent leaks. And, not that this is particularly important, but they do come in fun, cute designs!

The Luvs Ultra Leakguards are available in a wide range of sizes: newborn, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and average about 17 cents per diaper, so they’re great if you’re on a budget. And what really sets these diapers apart is the money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with their performance.

Like with Pampers, Luvs don’t disclose the ingredients list readily and don’t discuss any kind of eco-credentials or plant-based materials. So, again, if you’re looking for overnight diapers that are also kind to the environment (and luckily, there are so many!), these are perhaps not the brand for you.

In terms of reviews, they average 4.5 out of 5 in more than 2,100 reviews, which users saying they’re absorbent, leak-proof and a great fit for their little one!

The GoodThe Bad
◆ Absorbent
◆ Soft on the skin
◆ Wide fastening
◆ Leak barrier on the legs
◆ Fun designs
◆ Available in a range of sizes
◆ They come with a money-back guarantee
◆ Budget-friendly
◆ Great reviews
◆ No eco-credentials
◆ They’re not quick to reveal ingredients lists
◆ Not hypoallergenic
◆ They are not free of artificial fragrance, dyes or lotions
◆ They are Elementally Chlorine Free not Totally Chlorine Free
◆ Not free of petroleum-derived plastics

The bottom line

Luvs Ultra Leakguards seem pretty similar to Pampers in that they’re made to do the job, but that’s about it. While they do have a money-back guarantee, they’re not made for little ones with sensitive skin and it looks like the company isn’t going out of their way to do their bit for the environment.

7. Parents Choice Overnight Diapers — Best Budget-Friendly overnight diapers

Parent’s Choice Overnight Diapers are exclusive to Walmart, so you can either get these in-store or order them online. They boast added absorbency for use at night, they’re breathable, so they help to keep your little one comfortable and dry for up to 12 hours and protect them from leaks.

Not only are they effective, but they’re hypoallergenic, so suitable for babies with sensitive skin, latex-free and feature added vitamin E and aloe. The brand says they’re steering clear of stiff materials and have designed their overnights to be soft and snug, for keeping your little one comfortable throughout the night.

They’re available in sizes 4, 5 and 6 and range from around 17 to 23 cents each, depending on the size you choose. This is by far one of the cheaper brands, so great for parents and carers on a budget.

Again, Parent’s Choice Overnight Diapers, unfortunately, don’t make their ingredients clear and don’t discuss any kind of plant-based materials used or efforts to minimize their impact on the environment with production. Another negative is that they don’t seem to have the best reviews: an average of 3.7 out of 5 in over 400 ratings.

The goodThe bad
◆ Absorbent
◆ Leak protection
◆ Hypoallergenic
◆ Latex-free
◆ They featured added vitamin E and aloe
◆ Soft and snug for a comfortable fit
◆ Very good value
◆ No eco-credentials
◆ They don’t have the best reviews on average compared to similar brands
◆ They’re not quick to list the materials used
◆ They are not free of artificial fragrance, dyes or lotions
◆ They do not state if they are chlorine-free
◆ Not free of petroleum-derived plastics

The bottom line

While the reviews aren’t as great as other brands, every baby is different, and what doesn’t work for others might work for you. They’re great if you’re looking for budget-friendly overnight diapers, but if you also want a brand that’s doing its bit for the planet, look elsewhere.

8. Goodnites Bedwetting Underwear for big Kids — Best Overnight diaper for Heavy Wetters older kids

Taking a slight detour from the overnight diaper world, Goodnites Bedwetting Underwear for big kids are great for little ones who are heavy wetters or wet the bed frequently. The number 1 selling nighttime underwear brand boasts up to 40% more protection than leading training underwear and, with 5 layer protection, it’s clear why! They even feature double leg barriers for leak protection.

They’re designed with a stretchy waistband for a soft and comfortable fit, absorb odors and are available in fun designs, so your little one will love wearing them. They come in special designs for boys and girls and are perfect both for children who only wet at night and little ones who are potty trained, but still wet at night.

Goodnites bedwetting underwear ranges from around 57 cents per diaper to around 82, depending on the size you choose, so they’re more expensive, but, really, are a completely different product to diapers. Great reviews seem to justify the price, with an average of 4.6 out of 5 in over 1500 reviews (for the small/medium pack for boys). Reviewers say they’re a great fit, provide protection from leaks and kids love the designs.

The GoodThe Bad
◆ Super absorbent
◆ Great for children who only wet at night
◆ Double leg barriers for leak protection
◆ Stretchy waistband for a soft and comfortable fit
◆ Great reviews
◆ Fun designs, so your little one will enjoy wearing them
◆ Absorbs odors
◆ Great reviews
◆ They’re more pricey, but considering they’re designed for older children rather than young babies, this is understandable
◆ No eco-credentials
◆ It’s hard to find a list of materials used

The bottom line

These Goodnites are great for little ones who are nearly there when it comes to staying dry but need extra support at night. They’ll love the fun designs, but they are more expensive. They also don’t list their ingredients readily or boast of any eco-credentials.

Best Overnight Diapers for Heavy Wetters FAQs

1.What is a booster pad, and does my baby need one?

For parents of heavy wetters, it might be worth considering adding a booster pad to your overnight diaper, for extra peace of mind and protection. A booster pad is essentially just an extra absorbent layer that can be placed in the diaper to support the absorption of wetting and leaks. They’re especially useful for overnight, for obvious you-and-baby-need-plenty-of-sleep reasons!

Sposie Booster Pads

Sposie Booster Pads are a popular choice for little ones who require that extra bit of protection, as they double the absorbency of their usual diaper. They’re silky soft, so very comfortable for your baby, and of course, by absorbing the extra moisture, they help to keep the baby free from skin irritation or rashes.

They’re hypoallergenic – tested by pediatricians and dermatologists in fact, so safe for little ones with sensitive skin, suit diaper sizes 4-6 and are available both with adhesive (a sticky bit!) and without. As an added extra, they’re also free from chlorine, latex, fragrances, harmful chemicals and phthalates.

Medline Booster Pads

Like Sposie pads, Medline Booster Pads support overnight diapers to do their job effectively. They help to eliminate leaks, fit most diapers and training underwear and say they increase absorbency by 10 ounces.

Medline is free from added fragrances, latex and chlorine and features an adhesive strip to keep the pad in place in your baby’s diaper.

2. Do overnight diapers make a difference?

Most brands of overnight diapers will make a difference in how long your baby stays dry. They tend to be the most absorbent on the market, and usually the thickest. They’ve been tried and tested, and most say they keep the baby dry for up to 12 hours, which you’re definitely gonna need if you’re planning on getting at least a few hours of sleep!

Ultimately, it’s a case of finding what works best for you. If your little one is a heavy wetter, overnight diapers are pretty crucial. Try out a couple of brands from my picks above, and see how your baby gets on!

3. Can I use overnight diapers during the day?

There’s no reason why you can’t use overnight diapers during the day, although, considering their absorbency and thickness, they are better suited to nighttime. In the day, you might prefer a sleeker, thinner diaper that allows the baby to move more freely than overnight diapers would.

4. Should I change diapers at night?

If your little one needs a change, then absolutely! Of course, babies don’t have to be changed immediately when they wet to stay comfortable, thanks to the absorbency of diapers on the market now, but if they’re awoken due to discomfort, or you see any leaks, it’s, of course, best to get them changed and dry. If you’d prefer to know exactly when the baby needs to be changed, try an overnight diaper with a wetness indicator.

5. Do pull-ups hold more than diapers?

As a general rule, pull-ups are really just for children who are trying to master the art of potty training, not for small babies or toddlers who aren’t ready for that just yet. They’re not meant to be super absorbent, because they’re really just for catching accidents and light wetting, rather than heavy wetting. Overnight diapers are the best choice until your little one is ready to take on the potty training world!

6. Can you put Two diapers on a baby at night?

There’s really no need to use two diapers on your baby at night. Not only are overnight diapers effective enough for heavy wetters, but it’ll make it pretty hard, near impossible, for your baby to get comfy! Imagine wearing a couple of adult diapers, and trying to get a decent sleep. It ain’t gonna happen.

7. Should you size up in overnight diapers?

Sizing up in overnight diapers is generally not needed, as you still need them to fit snugly and comfortably for them to be effective and protect against leaks. Like with all diapers, the sizes are a guide, but the one you need will really depend on your baby. Try the size that’s normal for them, and only if they’re too small and tight should you size up. You still need them to be comfortable and keep the baby safe. Diapers that are too big won’t be effective!

8. Can overnight diapers help your baby sleep more?

The more effective the diaper at absorbing contents, the better your baby should sleep. If you’re using thin, poor quality diapers, your baby is more likely to wake up wanting a change. But if you find the best overnight diapers for you – and nearly all boast of extra absorbency – they should keep your little one comfortable and dry for anything up to 12 hours. In theory, your baby should, therefore, sleep a little better, and a little longer. And I don’t think any of us would turn that down!

Final thoughts About best diaper solutions for heavy wetter

There’s clearly plenty of choices when it comes to ultra-absorbent overnight diapers, built to cope with the heaviest wetters and the leakiest of leaks. Finding the right brand for you and your baby will help you both to get a better night’s sleep, and with so many on the market, it shouldn’t be long before your little one is staying dry and comfortable for longer.

From overnight diapers that are both effective and eco-friendly to overnight diapers that are great for those on a budget, you’re sure to find a fantastic diaper amongst my roundup above. Now, if we could just figure out a way to prevent them from demanding food throughout the night, that would be great…
