To say that Huggies is a household name would be an understatement. This global brand is popular for a reason – the company knows what it takes to make an effective diaper. If they were handing out gold medals for sales… well, you know.
Their Little Snugglers variety is a big hit with parents of newborns and younger babies. Their softness and absorbency are key to their success, and their brilliant reviews are testament to this.
But with so many diapers on the market, and so many brands making eco-conscious changes, are Huggies Little Snugglers still the best?
They might be soft, but the real question is, are they non-toxic?

What is different about Huggies Little Snugglers? Their features
Huggies Little Snugglers diapers feature a breathable pocketed waistband, which helps to prevent leaks. They also boast ‘tiny pillows’ on the liner, which are soft on your little one’s skin.
Their preemie and newborn sizes feature an umbilical cord notch.
What are Huggies Little Snugglers made of?
Huggies are actually very transparent with their ingredients, which is great news for parents and carers. Here’s what they contain:
- Wood pulp, to absorb moisture
- Polypropylene, to make the diapers soft and durable
- Polyethylene, for softness and protection
- Polyurethane elastics
- Polyolefin elastic
- Adhesives
- Colorants – Huggies says these are ‘safe’ and ‘non-sensitizing’, but they don’t state whether they’re free of heavy metals
- Printing inks – ‘non-sensitizing’
- Sodium polyacrylate – an absorbent material
- Polyester
- Color-changing wetness indicator

It won’t come as a surprise that all the ingredients with ‘poly’ in their name are simply different forms of plastic. While there isn’t a 100% plant-based diaper on the market, there are plenty of alternatives out there that use a great percentage of sustainable materials, including Ecoriginals and Kudos.
Huggies really needs to up its game when it comes to using plant-based materials. Yes, it’s more expensive, but mass production brings down costs, which shouldn’t have to be passed on to parents. Considering the company generated an eye-watering $1.86 billion profit in 2016, it’s safe to say they have the money and resources to find eco alternatives, for everyone.
Do Huggies Little Snugglers contain chemicals?
It’s not enough to just be effective. Parents and carers are demanding more from their diapers, with more and more of us aware of hidden toxins in popular diaper varieties, as well as their terrible impact on the planet.
It’s great that Huggies is relatively transparent about what they include in their Little Snugglers diapers, but we need a little more information about what they avoid. They tell us that their diapers are free of fragrances, lotions and rubber latex, which all have the potential to irritate delicate skin.
But there’s no word on phthalates.
Phthalates are the difficult-to-pronounce chemicals that make their way into all sorts of household products, including flooring, toys and baby diapers. Like fragrances and lotions, they could irritate your baby’s skin. But, perhaps even more seriously than that, phthalates have been linked to increased rates of asthma and eczema in little ones. Many diaper brands are clear about their avoidance of these horrible chemicals, including Little Toes, Andy Pandy and Eco Pea (some of my favorites!). But Huggies doesn’t tell us whether they avoid them or not. And if a brand doesn’t explicitly tell us that their diapers are free of phthalates, it’s much safer to assume that they’re used.
Are Huggies Little Snugglers chlorine-free?
Huggies tells us that their Little Snugglers variety is elemental chlorine-free. Unlike fragrances, lotions and phthalates, it’s not necessarily an issue when it comes to skin safety, but it’s terrible for the environment. And if you thought it was just used in swimming pools, you’re not the only one…
Chlorine bleaching is used by diaper companies to make their diapers absorbent and sometimes to make them look super white. But this can be done without chlorine, so it’s best to look for chlorine-free diapers when you can.
Where are Huggies Little Snugglers made?

The price of Huggies Little Snugglers diapers will vary depending on where you buy them. And they’re available pretty much everywhere – at the big retailers like Amazon, Walmart and Target – as well as smaller stores and probably most convenience stores.
Like all diapers, the price also varies a lot depending on the size you need. A size 1 pack of diapers over on Amazon works out at just 26 cents each. This rises to 33 cents per diaper for a size 3 pack, and 55 cents per diaper for size 6.
You can certainly find cheaper diapers when it comes to the larger sizes of Huggies Little Snugglers, but the smaller sizes aren’t a bad price at all.

Some diapers promise up to 12 hours of protection, but Huggies doesn’t make that claim about their Little Snugglers variety. The focus is instead on softness.

Little Movers appear to be more absorbent, and suitable for overnights. They’re also available in size 7, which is good news for toddlers. Little Snugglers, though, are suitable throughout the diapering journey, but not so good for overnights.

Little Snugglers diapers really focus on their softness. Special Delivery diapers focus on the fact that they use some plant-based materials.

There’s not much between the two varieties, apart from Special Delivery diapers’ use of plant-based materials. They’re a similar price, have similar reviews and come in similar sizes. Special Delivery diapers aren’t available in a preemie size, like Little Snugglers.
Out of the two, Special Delivery diapers are preferable because they contain some plant-based materials. It’s not enough, especially when you compare them with uber-green diapers like Andy Pandy, but it’s a start.

What can I buy instead of Huggies Little Snugglers – Huggies Little Snugglers alternatives
It’s great that Huggies Little Snugglers are soft and effective. But with so many diapers on the market offering even more, it’s simply not enough. There are so many gold-medal-winning diapers available, offering biodegradable and toxin-free diapers that are as good for the planet as they are for our babies.
Some of my favorites include Ecoriginals and Dyper. Ecoriginals diapers are made with an impressive 90% biodegradable materials, including sustainably-sourced wood pulp. They boast 40% greater absorbency than some disposables and are completely free of toxins, including fragrances, lotions and the real baddie – phthalates.
Not only that, but the company plants a tree for every order. Talk about going above and beyond.

Dyper diapers are another of my all-time favorites. Completely vegan, these biodegradable diapers contain no harmful chemicals and offer a subscription service, for toxin-free diapers straight to your door.

A super super budget-friendly option that’s still free of dangerous toxins is Mama Bear Gentle Touch. While they’re not made with plant-based materials, these great value diapers are free of phthalates, fragrances, chlorine and lotions and all waste from the manufacturing process is either reused or recycled.
All in all, there are plenty of brilliant alternatives to Huggies Little Snugglers.
Conclusion: Are Huggies Little Snugglers worth it?
Huggies Little Snugglers diapers are popular for a reason… or a few. They’re effective, soft and, at least with the smaller sizes, not a bad price. But there’s more to finding the best diapers. And when it comes to looking after our little ones and the planet, Huggies don’t tick all the boxes.
Although they’re free of fragrances and lotions, they probably contain phthalates, arguably the worst of all the harsh chemicals often used in diapers. And they’re not completely free of chlorine, which is terrible for the planet.
So, inclusion, no – Huggies Little Snugglers aren’t worth it. But with so many soft, absorbent and non-toxic diapers out there (at a decent price), it’s safe to say there’s a budget-friendly, skin-safe diaper out there for your little one.
