We should be free to pick up any diaper or pull-up, knowing that the materials used are safe for the delicate skin of our little ones. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case.
Many brands sneak a smorgasbord of chemicals and toxins into their pull-ups, which is terrible news for our toddlers. From fragrances and lotions, which can easily irritate the skin, to the lesser-known phthalates, which have been linked to asthma, eczema, and even abnormal genital development, it’s crucial that we find completely non-toxic pull-ups for our not-so-little-anymore babies.
Heaps of brands are coming to the rescue with their completely skin-safe pull-ups and training pants. And many are super eco-conscious too, so you can be sure that your toddler’s skin – and the planet – are being protected.
Let’s take a closer look at non-toxic pull-ups, and which brands are the best.

Best Non-Toxic Pull-Up on the Market
✔ More than 90% biodegradable
✔ Free of harsh toxins
✔ Made with soft, sustainable bamboo
✔ A carbon positive company
Are Pull-up diapers safe?
While we shouldn’t have to worry about toxins in baby products, unfortunately, we really do.
But why are they still used?
Lots of chemicals that are typically used in diapers and pull-ups make the manufacturing process cheaper, and many aren’t regulated by the FDA. That means brands can continue using them without any repercussions.
Pull-ups often hide all sorts of chemical-covered plastics, along with fragrances and lotions. These can very easily irritate the skin, and are a common cause of nasty skin rashes.
Chemicals like phthalates make products more durable, but that’s no excuse to use them. In fact, they’ve been linked to asthma and eczema in young children. It’s pretty crazy that brands are not only ‘allowed’ to use these toxins, but choose to.
While some brands have got a long way to go when it comes to protecting our babies and toddlers, there are heaps of pull-ups on the market that are super safe for our little ones. These pull-ups avoid potentially harmful toxins, and get the gold medal when it comes to skin health.
So what are these brands, and how can you get your hands on them? As quickly as possible…
What are the best non-toxic pull-ups for toddlers?

Eco Pea Training Pants

- Any plant-based material used? Yes
Eco Pea pull-ups are, pretty impressively, made with 85% biodegradable materials. The brand steers clear of phthalates, fragrances, chlorine and lotions and, as an extra nod to the environment, their shipping process is completely carbon-neutral.
As if that wasn’t enough, Eco Pea’s pull-ups are made without gluten, are completely hypoallergenic, and they’re cruelty-free and vegan.
It might come as a shock to learn that not all diapers and pull-ups are cruelty-free. Check out my guide to the best vegan-friendly diapers to learn more!
Reviews
Eco Pea’s reviews are glowing. Averaging 4.7 out of 5 on Eco Pea’s site, parents and carers say they’re super effective, a great fit, and perfect for little ones’ sensitive skin.
Sizes
Size | Weight |
2T-3T | <34lbs |
3T-4T | 32-40lbs |
4T-5T | 38lbs+ |
Eco Pea’s sizing is typical for pull-ups, from 2T-5T.
Price $$
A one-off pack of 26 Eco Pea 2T-3T training pants will set you back $17.49. That’s about 67 cents each.
But you can save 20% if you subscribe. This subscription is super easy to amend and to cancel, so it’s worth giving it a go. If you subscribe, you can get the same pack of 26 2T-3T pull-ups for $13.99. That’s about 54 cents per pull-up, so it’s a significant saving!
Buy at: It seems that you can only buy Eco Pea diapers and pull-ups on Eco Pea’s own site. They’re not yet on Amazon, and you might find them in some independent health shops.
Made in: Like many pull-ups on the market, Eco Pea’s offerings are manufactured in China.
The Bottom Line:
Eco Pea’s impressive eco credentials and great value make them the perfect non-toxic diaper. Save a massive 20% when you subscribe and save, and sleep soundly knowing that your little one’s wearing some of the healthiest diapers on the market!
Ecoriginals Training Pants
- Fragrance No
- Chlorine No
- Phthalates No
- Lotions No
- Biodegradable Yes
- Any plant-based material used? Yes
If the 85% biodegradable materials of Eco Pea diapers wasn’t enough, Ecoriginals have got you. Their pull-ups are made with 90% biodegradable materials and, of course, they steer clear of harsh toxins too.
Made with breathable bamboo, these truly eco-conscious pull-ups will keep your toddler dry for up to 12 hours or more. And in true eco-friendly style, their products are packed in compostable paper packs, the company is carbon neutral, and a tree is planted for every order placed.
Reviews
If all of that wasn’t enough, Ecoriginals can boast seriously impressive reviews. In fact, they average 4.9 out of 5 in over 640 reviews on the brand’s own site. Most reviewers love that Ecoroginals pull-ups are super effective, soft on the skin, and good for the planet.
Sizing
When looking at the Ecoriginals site, it’s easy to assume the company only offers side tab diapers and not pull-ups. The sizing’s a little confusing to say the least. So here’s a handy guide…
Size | Weight |
Crawler training pants | 13-24lbs |
Toddler training pants | 22-31lbs |
Walker training pants | 29-40lbs |
Junior training pants | 40lbs+ |
They need to distinguish a bit better between pull-ups and diapers. But they definitely sell both!
Price $$
It’s hard to examine Ecoriginals prices per diaper. They offer a subscription service, and a trial pack will set you back $34.99. This pack includes 3 packs of compostable wipes, along with a pack of Ecoriginals diapers or pull-ups.
A one-time bundle of 6 packs of diapers will set you back $111.99, but if you subscribe, that price will be knocked down to $89.59. That’s about 15 dollars per pack. A toddler pants pack has 20 pull-ups. So that works out at about 75 cents per pull-up.
Buy at: You can buy Ecoriginals diapers from the Ecoriginals site.
Made in: Ecoriginals products are made with materials from the US, Japan and China. They’re also made in China.
The Bottom Line
It doesn’t get more biodegradable than Ecoriginals. These non-toxic diapers are leading the way when it comes to skin and earth-friendly products for our little ones. And I just hope that other brands take note!
Healthybaby Training Pants
- Fragrance No
- Phthalates No
- Chlorine No
- Lotions No
- Biodegradable No
- Any plant-based material used? Yes
Healthybaby have a lot to live up to. The brand calls their diapers and pull-ups ‘the world’s best’.
So, no pressure.
Healthybaby, formerly called Healthynest, produces the only EWG-verified diapers on the market right now. But what does EWG mean, and why does it matter?
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a not-for-profit group that aims to highlight harmful industry practices. They want consumers to be able to make healthy choices easily, and they achieve this with game-changing research.
Healthybaby diapers and pull-ups are the first on the market to become EWG-verified. The group examined Healthybaby’s ingredients and determined that they’re super safe for our little ones’ delicate skin.
Not only that, but Healthybaby is a certified B corporation. That means that Not only that, but Healthybaby is a Certified B Corporation. That means that the brand adheres to ‘high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.’
They’re not biodegradable, which is the only downside.
Reviews
Unsurprisingly, Healthybaby’s pull-ups average an amazing 4.85 out of 5 in over 150 reviews on the brand’s own site. Reviews say that the brand’s pull-ups are super soft, but also great at preventing leaks.
Sizing
Size | Weight |
3 | 12-18lbs |
4 | 16-28lbs |
5 | 22-37lbs |
6 | 37lbs+ |
Buy at: You can buy Healthybaby diapers on the brand’s site, where you won’t just find diapers and pull-ups, but household products, skincare and pre-natal supplements too!
Made in: The brand tells us that their diapers are made in Europe, in a carbon-neutral facility.
The Bottom Line
When it comes to skin-safety, you can’t get any better than Healthybaby diapers and pull-ups. They avoid all potentially-harmful chemicals and every bit of the diaper that touches your little one’s skin is made with plant-based materials.
They’re not biodegradable, which is a shame, but perhaps they’ll look to be in the future.
Seventh Generation Training Pants
- Fragrance No
- Chlorine No
- Phthalates No
- Lotions No
- Biodegradable No
- Any plant-based material used Yes
Seventh Generation is one of the original eco-friendlier brands. You’ll find them in grocery stores across the country, and online, of course.
These stretchy pull-ups use some plant-based materials, although we’re not told an exact percentage. They feature tear-away side panels that let you adjust to fit and, as expected, they’re completely free of chemicals that might irritate the skin.
Reviews
Seventh Generation’s pull-ups average a great 4.5 out of 5 in over 250 reviews – that’s on the brand’s own site. Most reviews are really positive, with parents and carers saying they’re great at preventing leaks, they’re a great fit and they’re soft on the skin. Others say they’re on the pricier side, especially considering they’re not biodegradable.
Sizing
Size | Weight |
2T-3T | Up to 34lbs |
3T-4T | 32-40lbs |
4T-5T | 38lbs+ |
Seventh Generation training pants are suitable for toddlers up to 38lbs+.
Price: $$$
Over on Amazon, expect to pay over a dollar per pant for a pack of large Seventh Generation pull-ups. In fact, a 4-pack bundle of large training pants will cost you $1.08 per pant. That’s a lot compared to similar brands.
Buy at: You can buy Seventh Generation training pants on Amazon, as well as Target, Walgreens, Walmart and Sam’s Club.
Made in: Seventh Generation diapers are manufactured in the US.
The Bottom Line
The advantage of Seventh Generation pull-ups over similar brands is that they’re readily available. You’ll find them in most major grocery stores, online and in some smaller stores too.
On the other hand, they’re on the more expensive side. It’s great that they’re non-toxic, but they’re not biodegradable, as many brands are: Eco Pea and Ecoriginals, for example.
Hello Bello training pants

- Chlorine No
- Phthalates No
- Lotions No
- Biodegradable No

Kristen Bell, of The Good Place and Frozen fame, has another string to her bow. Not content with starring in global hit movies, she and her husband launched Hello Bello, a diaper and pull-up company that has the non-toxic thing cracked.
The brand produces toxin-free products for our little ones that are effective, skin-healthy and good value for money.
While they use some plant-based materials, the company doesn’t give us exact percentages, and they’re not biodegradable.
But, their prints are undeniably adorable.
Reviews
Hello Bello’s training pants have some great reviews. Heading over to Walmart’s site, the brand averages 4.5 out of 5 in over 210 reviews.
Reviews say the pull-ups are soft, effective and certainly planet-friendlier than some other popular pull-up brands.

Expect to pay around 50 cents per pull-up for size 2T-3T and about 50 cents per pull-up with sizes 3T-4T and 4T-5T.
Prices will vary, depending on where you buy your Hello Bello pull-ups, of course.

Made in: Hello Bello tells us that most of its products are made in the US, but their diapers and training pants are made in China.
The Bottom Line:
Hello Bello diapers have gained a cult following for a reason. Their non-toxic, effective and super cute pull-ups are a good choice if you’re looking for skin-healthy choices. They’re not biodegradable, so not the creme de la creme, but pretty good all the same.
Eco by Naty Training Pants
- Fragrance No
- Chlorine No
- Phthalates No
- Lotions No
- Biodegradable No
- Any plant-based material used? Yes
Founded in Sweden in 1994, Eco by Naty is another very well-known eco-friendlier diaper brand. Their plant-based pull-ups are soft and stretchy, and feature nature-inspired designs.
They’re made to feel like underwear, but the brand says they’ll keep your little one dry day and night.
They’re free of harsh chemicals like phthalates, fragrances and lotions, and use some plant-based materials. Like many similar brands on the market, though, we don’t know the exact percentage.
And they’re not biodegradable.

Reviews
Reviews of Eco by Naty pull-ups are pretty amazing, averaging 4.5 out of 5 in over 2600 reviews on Amazon. 79% of users rate them 5 stars, with reviews loving their softness and stretchiness. But the price is a sticking point for many parents and carers, understandably, with some sizes costing over a dollar per training pant.
Sizing
Size | Weight |
4 | 18-33lbs |
5 | 26-40lbs |
6 | 35lbs+ |
Price: $$$
Eco by Naty pull-ups are anything but cheap. You’ll pay about 72 cents per pull-up for size 5 over on Amazon, and even more for size 6: 95 cents per person. It’s on the higher side of the price spectrum, for sure, especially considering they’re not biodegradable.
Buy at: You can buy Eco by Naty training pants at Amazon, as well as Walgreens and Walmart.
Made in: Eco by Naty’s products are designed in Sweden, where the brand was founded, but the diapers and pull-ups are manufactured in China.
The Bottom Line
What Naty pull-ups have done for the industry is amazing. They paved the way for eco-friendlier, non-toxic diapers, and that’s no mean feat. But they’re on the expensive side, and we need to know what percentage of plant-based materials are used.
It sounds like they were the OGs… but now they have some catching up to do.
Honest training pants
- Fragrance No
- Chlorine No
- Phthalates No
- Lotions No
- Biodegradable No
- Any plant-based material used Yes
Honest diapers and pull-ups are often compared with Hello Bello’s, and not just because they were both created by A-list superstars.
Like Kristen Bell’s products, Jessica Alba’s Honest brand shuns harsh toxins like fragrances, lotions, phthalates and chlorine, and uses some plant-based materials.
We’re not told what percentage is used, though, and they’re not biodegradable.
We’re just told that their core is made with sustainably harvested fluff pulp, and they’re soft and absorbent.
Oh, and there’s the signature cute prints, of course.
Reviews
Honest diapers average 4.4 out of 5 in over 1800 reviews on Amazon. While most reviews are super positive, some say that the pull-ups run small, which can cause issues with poor fitting or leaking.
Sizing
Size | Weight |
2T-3T | Up to 34lbs |
3T-4T | 32-40lbs |
4T-5T | 38lbs+ |
Price $
The price of Honest’s pull-ups might vary quite a bit, depending on where you buy them. Over on Amazon, a pack of 78 2T-3T pull-ups will set you back about 36 bucks – that’s about 46 cents per training pant.
That’s pretty good value for non-toxic diapers.
Buy at: You can buy Honest’s training pants on the Honest website, and over on Amazon.
Made in: Like many diapers on the market, Honest’s diapers and pull-ups are made in China.
The Bottom Line
Honest’s diapers are made with some plant-based materials and are free of harsh toxins like phthalates, fragrances and lotions. To be honest, there are better pull-ups on the market – pull-ups that use a significant percentage of plant-based materials and are biodegradable.
But they’re an okay option if you’re looking for a subscription service that won’t break the bank.
Natural Blossom Pull-Up Diapers
- Fragrance No
- Chlorine No
- Phthalates No
- Lotions No
- Biodegradable No
- Any plant-based material used Yes
Natural Blossom is a lesser-known British brand that produces non-toxic diapers and pull-ups. Their pull-ups are soft on the skin and certified by Allergy UK. They avoid phthalates, fragrances and lotions, and offer a comfortable and flexible fit. The brand tells us that they’re suitable for both the daytime and nighttimes.
You won’t find them in grocery stores, but you can get them over on Amazon.
The certified-vegan brand features an endangered animal on each pack, so you’d assume that they’re super eco-conscious. But they don’t tell us that they use a significant percentage of plant-based materials. In fact, they say they use ‘premium raw materials’ for the parts that meet our babies’ skin.
What that actually means, I’m not sure…
Reviews
Over on Amazon, Natural Blossom pull-ups average 4.5 out of 5 in over 290 reviews. They’re top-rated for comfort and softness, and, whilst most parents and carers say they’re super absorbent too, some have raised issues with leak protection. Reviewers also love that there’s no chemical smell, like there is with some other diaper and pull-up brands on the market.
Sizing
Size | Weight |
L | 19-30lbs |
XL | 26-37lbs |
XXL | 33lbs+ |
XXXL | 37lbs+ |
Natural Blossom steers away from traditional pull-up sizing – 2T-5T – and instead opts for L-XXXL.
Price $$$
An 80-pack of XXL Natural Blossom diapers will set you back about 76 cents per diaper. A pack of XXXL size will set you back about 85 cents. That’s certainly not cheap.
Buy at: In the US, your best bet to find Natural Blossom diapers and pull-ups is to head to Amazon.
Made in: Natural Blossom pull-ups are designed in South Korea, and manufactured in China.
The Bottom Line
It’s great that Natural Blossom diapers are non-toxic, but they don’t offer enough information about eco-credentials. Considering their high price, it’s safe to say there are better options on the market for your money.
Rascal and Friends Training Pants
- Fragrance No
- Chlorine Yes
- Phthalates No
- Lotions No
- Biodegradable No
- Any plant-based material used Yes
Rascal + Friends is another lesser-known brand. But they’re starting to make waves, and are now available at Walmart – in-store and online. Their training pants are completely free of fragrances, elemental chlorine and phthalates, but that means they’re not completely free of chlorine.
The certified vegan brand says their products will keep your toddler dry for up to 12 hours and offer a comfy, flexible fit.
They tell us that the packaging is made from recyclable plastic, but that’s where the eco-credentials end. We’re not told that they use a significant percentage of plant-based materials, and they’re certainly not biodegradable.
Reviews
Rascal and Friends pull-ups average 4.6 out of 5 in over 160 reviews over on the Walmart site. The vast majority of parents and carers rate the pull-ups 5 stars, saying they’re super effective and flexible.
Sizing
Size | Weight |
2T-3T | 20-34lbs |
3T-4T | 32-40lbs |
4T-5T | 36lbs+ |
Rascal and Friends offer typical pull-up sizes – and offer nothing bigger than 4T-5T.
Price $
A 124-pack of Rascal and Friends diapers at Walmart works out at about 37 cents per pull-up. That’s pretty cheap compared to most brands.
Buy at: You’ll find Rascal and Friends products at Walmart, in some stores and online.
Made in: Rascal and Friends diapers and pull-ups are designed in New Zealand and made in China.
The Bottom Line
While these pull-ups aren’t completely free of chlorine, they’re certainly one of the cheapest options on the market when it comes to non-toxic pull-ups. They need to up their eco-credentials, but they’re a good choice if you’re looking for fragrance-free, phthalate-free and lotion-free pull-ups on a budget.
FAQ about non-toxic pull-ups
1. Do Huggies pull-ups have chlorine?
Huggies Pull-ups are free of elemental chlorine, but not totally chlorine free. Chlorine is terrible for the planet, so it’s best to avoid it if possible. Huggies Pull-ups also probably contain phthalates, which have been linked to the increased risk of asthma and eczema in little ones and abnormal genital development in boys, so it’s best to steer clear.
There are plenty of chlorine and phthalate free pull-ups on the market: Eco Pea, Healthybaby and Ecoriginals to name a few.
2. Are Pampers pull-ups toxic?
Yes, yes and yes. Pampers Easy Ups contain fragrances and lotions, and they don’t mention their use of phthalates. It’s safer, then, to assume they’re used. All these unnecessary, potentially-harmful toxins are easily avoided.
Brands like Andy Pandy, Hello Bello and Ecoriginals are clear about their avoidance of chemicals like these. So I’d recommend them over Pampers, for sure.
Read More: Hello Bello Pull-Ups Review: Do These A-List Training Pants Live Up To The Hype?
3. Should I use pull-ups for potty training?
While you certainly don’t have to use pull-ups, they’re made to aid potty training. But every little one is different, and how you tackle potty training is a decision personal to your family.
Pull-ups – or training pants, as they’re often known – are made to support potty training because they’re easier for toddlers to use themselves. They can easily pull them up and down, and they also get little ones used to wearing underwear.
On the flip side, some parents find that using pull-ups beyond a certain stage doesn’t help with training. As pull-ups are generally very absorbent, little ones won’t necessarily notice when they pee. So some find that regular underwear is better when their toddlers are ready. The theory is that they won’t want to feel wet, so they’ll be more likely to communicate when they need to go.
The bottom line is this. Every toddler is different, and learns new skills at a different pace. Do what works for you and your family, and speak to your physician if you have any concerns.

Conclusion: Are pull-ups toxic?
Our little ones’ skin doesn’t stop being delicate as they become toddlers. Their young skin deserves the best, and unfortunately, not all brands offer it. Many brands, including Huggies and Pampers, contain toxins that are harsh on the skin and potentially harmful to health in other ways. So these brands are best avoided.
Luckily, there are heaps of non-toxic brands to choose from that offer safe and sensitive pull-ups and training pants for our older babies and toddlers. These products are truly hypoallergenic, and many boast super impressive eco-credentials too: Ecoriginals, Eco Pea and Dyper to name some of my favorites.
When buying diapers and pull-ups, you shouldn’t have to do your research, but you do. Unfortunately, brands get away with filling their products with all sorts of harsh chemicals, so it’s worth doing some digging to check they’re safe before putting them on your little ones’ delicate skin.
Or, just choose a trusted brand from the list above. Take note, Pampers and Huggies!
