Hello Bello Diapers Review: A-List Diapers For Your Little One

Jessica Alba really started something in Hollywood when she founded the skin-friendly diaper company, Honest. Now the uber-famous Kristen Bell has stepped up to the diaper plate to show us what affordable, non-toxic, and skin-friendly diapers look like, helping to revolutionize the market.

Hello Bello was created to offer parents and carers access to ‘affordable, premium products’ with ‘the planet in mind’, although, on first glance, their not as eco-friendly as you might expect…

They state that their mission is to close the gap between what parents know is the best for their little ones, and what we can realistically afford. Unsurprisingly, non-toxic, organic, and biodegradable diapers tend to be more expensive than their plastic, chemical-filled counterparts, for obvious reasons: plastic diapers are much cheaper to produce.

So it’s great that Kristen Bell and her husband, Dax Shepard, are trying to provide a solution. And their offerings are pretty impressive when it comes to steering clear of toxins, with chemical-free diapers delivered straight to your door.

Here’s my review of these A-list diapers: what they’re made from, where to get them and if they’re worth trying!

What are Hello Bello diapers made of?

Let’s start with the most important bit: what Hello Bello diapers are made from. Considering our babies and their precious skin are gonna spend the best part of 3 or 4 years in these things, it’s important to know their ingredients. It might not be something you’ve thought about before, and it’s not something a lot of diaper companies are keen for us to find out.

In fact, lots of diaper companies, especially some of the bigger brands, are pretty secretive when it comes to letting us know what their products are made from. And that’s because many ingredients used are pretty terrible, not only for the environment but for our babies’ health.

The majority of disposable diaper brands use petroleum-based plastics as the basis for their diapers. Despite the brand appearing to be environmentally friendly, Hello Bello diapers are made predominantly with petroleum-based plastics. They feature a chlorine-free, sustainably harvested fluff pulp core, but their top and back sheets are derived from petroleum.

They have a plant-derived plastic core liner, but the rest of the diaper is, you guessed it, plastic – with a polypropylene and spandex waistband, super absorbent polymer (the bit that soaks up the wetness), and a polypropylene outer cover. Hello Bello doesn’t tell us the percentage of plant-based materials used, unlike some of my favorite brands, like Dyper and Ecoriginals.

What are Hello Bello Diapers free from?

Hello Bello are free of the following toxins:

  • Chlorine
  • Dyes and inks
  • Fragrances
  • Lotions
  • Phthalates
  • Latex
  • Parabens

Never heard of phthalates? Diaper brands don’t shout about their use of these chemicals for a reason. They’re used in everything from diapers to flooring to children’s toys1, and exposure to them has been linked to an increased risk of asthma and eczema2, along with abnormal genital development. The secrecy is starting to make sense…

Luckily, Hello Bello shun these toxins completely, along with fragrances, which is a term often used by diapers to cover up yet more chemicals in their diapers. The term ‘fragranced’ isn’t regulated by the FDA, which is why brands can use it in this way. And lotions are another completely unnecessary addition, which has the potential to cause nasty skin rashes. Again, Hello Bello’s diapers don’t contain lotions.

Hello Bello Diaper Features

Hello Bello diapers are ticking the right boxes when it comes to the nasty stuff they avoid, but what about their features?

  • Super soft and absorbent: Hello Bello diapers are comfy for your little one, with a cloth-like feel. The brand says they have a ‘cutting-edge’ core that protects against leaks.
  • Hypoallergenic: Because Hello Bell diapers are made without irritants – phthalates, lotions, and fragrances – they’re suitable for babies with sensitive skin, and shouldn’t cause diaper rash.
  • Adorable designs: Ok, I get that the design doesn’t make an iota of difference to a diaper’s effectiveness, but Hello Bello does offer some seriously cute prints. There are dozens of designs and you can choose up to 7 different prints with each bundle.
  • Wetness indicator: Hello Bello’s newborn, size 1 and size 2 diapers feature a wetness indicator, so you’ll know exactly when your little one needs a change.
  • A little surprise with subscription box: A pretty amazing extra when you subscribe to Hello Bello diapers is the box that they arrive in. But this box is no ordinary box… In fact, every month you’ll be sent a new design that can be transformed into something fun for your baby or toddler, like a rocket, pirate ship, or box of treasure. Who needs expensive toys when you have free cardboard boxes?

The company once sent out their bundles in a box that turn into a Gingerbread House to celebrate Winter Holidays. If that doesn’t convince you to try them, I don’t know what will.

Where Hello Bello Diapers are made?

Hello Bello diapers are currently made in Waco, Texas (from fall 2021). They were made in Canada previously.

Are Hello Bello Diapers Cheap?

Cost is a big issue when it comes to choosing diapers. We all want the best for our babies and it’s clear that non-toxic diapers are just that. The problem is, they’re usually more expensive than diapers which don’t avoid certain chemicals, so we can’t always choose the ‘best’ if our budget doesn’t allow it.

Hello Bello recognizes this dilemma and says that their diapers are affordable. Let’s compare the cost to a range of other diaper brands, to find out just how budget-friendly they are. The following costs are the cheapest prices I could find for each diaper, and I’ll let you know where I found that price too.

Abby & Finn28 centsAbby & FinnChlorine, phthalates, lotions, fragrances and dyes

All of the diapers above have some kind of skin-friendly, eco-friendly credentials, although not all are created equal. It looks like both Huggies Special Delivery and Pampers Pure Protection diapers contain phthalates, and probably other potentially harmful toxins. And while Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers do steer clear of the major toxins, they do not contain any plant-based materials like the other brands, although they are produced in a zero-waste-to-landfill facility.

The best brands for your little one are undoubtedly those which avoid toxins and use predominantly plant-based ingredients: Dyper or Ecoriginals. While Hello Bello, Abby & Finn, and Honest diapers are the best picks of the brands above, as they avoid most harmful toxins and all use some plant-based materials, the percentage they use isn’t stated. In terms of cost, it looks like Abby & Finn are the cheapest per diaper (for size 3), followed by Hello Bello and Honest.

Hello Bello aren’t the most expensive skin-friendly diaper choice, and they go hand in hand with Abby & Finn diapers in the affordable non-toxic baby diapers race. And if you’re looking to save even more money on baby diapers, take a look at the Amazon Family Program. Free for Prime members, signing up gives you access to parenting tips, exclusive deals, and up to 20% off baby diaper and food subscriptions. You can get Hello Bello diapers from Amazon, and there are plenty of other non-toxic diaper choices available on the site: Bambo Nature, Dyper, and Mama Bear Gentle Touch to name just a few.

How well do Hello Bello diapers work?

It’s great that Hello Bello offers such skin-friendly diapers, but if they don’t keep the pee and poop at bay, you’re in for a pretty stressful time. So do they actually work?

Looking at Trust Pilot, their diapers are rated an average of 4.4 out of 5 in over 2,200 reviews. As expected, the majority of reviews are positive, crediting their comfort. Reading the opinions of parents and carers, it seems that Hello Bello diapers are pretty effective. There isn’t much talk of leaks or blowouts, except for overnights, and users say they’re great for sensitive skin. Some reviewers say that Hello Bello diapers aren’t quite as absorbent as the Honest Company’s offerings, but Honest diapers are more expensive.

Where can I buy Hello Bello diapers?

If you fancy jumping on board the Hello Bello train to a better diaper world, head over to their website, where you can buy individual products as well as subscription bundles. Their diapers are stocked on Amazon too, and, if you’d rather pick them up while grocery shopping, they’re available at Walmart and CVS. Walmart used to be their exclusive partner but as of July 2020 Hello Bello diapers are now available nationwide in CVS stores.

Hello Bello vs Honest vs Abby and Finn Subscription

Diaper subscription services are becoming increasingly popular as our lives get busier and busier. And we’re having to deal with quite a lot at the minute, like the global pandemic. No biggie.

Subscribing to diaper services means diapers delivered to your door, fuss-free, and it’s often a great way to save money too. Honest, Hello Bello and Abby & Finn all offer this service, so let’s take a look at what’s included.

Hello Bello Subscription

How it works

It’s super easy to subscribe to Hello Bello diapers. Simply select the kind of diapers you need – just diapers, training pants, or both diapers and training pants – and choose the size. Then comes the fun part: choosing from a range of crazy cute patterns. You can pick up to 7 different designs.

As part of the subscription, you get to choose a product freebie – anything from prenatal vitamins to baby oil to diaper cream. And if you fancy stocking up on Hello Bello’s other products, you’ll get 15% off up to 5 additional products as part of the service.

Shipping is completely free!

Cost: The cost of the bundle including a freebie, but without any additional products is 65 dollars. The number of diapers you get for this price differs depending on the size you choose. Here’s a breakdown:

SizeCost per diaper

Size 227 cents
Size 334 cents
Size 440 cents
Size 546 cents
Size 655 cents

*Prices were accurate at the time this article was published but may change over time.

That’s an average of 38 cents per diaper.

Abby & Finn Subscription

How it works

Abby & Finn’s diapers are made with chlorine-free wood pulp and are free of phthalates, lotions, fragrances, and dyes. While Honest, Abby & Finn, and Hello Bello don’t offer diapers that are biodegradable like Dyper, Andy Pandy, and Little Toes diapers, they’re arguably a better choice than most varieties of brands like Pampers and Huggies, which use no plant-based materials at all.

To subscribe to Abby & Finn diapers, select 3 jumbo packs – each can be a different size if you need them to be. Like Hello Bello, Abby & Finn offers some epic designs. While fancy patterns aren’t important to your baby (they probably won’t even be able to see them!), I must admit that they do brighten up a diaper change. You can choose 4 cute designs, or stick with plain white if you’d prefer. You can also add more packs at this point if you’d like to.

Abby & Finn offers baby wipes as an addition to your bundle; you’ll save 16% on the original price of the wipes if you do, and you have the choice to add their other products to your subscription at 10% off their normal price. Choose from diaper balms, anti-bacterial wipes, bubble baths, and shampoos.

Like with Hello Bello, you’ll get a freebie with your subscription (and who doesn’t love a freebie?). Choose from a range of hella cute BPA-free silicone bibs, perfect for when your little one starts munching on solids.

Finally, you can choose how often your bundle is delivered: every 2, 3, 4 or 5 weeks. And, like Hello Bello, Abby & Finn give back. In fact, for every monthly box parents buy, 30 diapers are donated to those who need them.

Shipping: Shipping is free on bundles over $49.

Cost: If you don’t add any extras, each bundle of 3 packs will cost you 49 dollars. You’ll get a different number of diapers in each bundle, depending on which size you need. Here’s the breakdown of cost per diaper for each size:

SizeCost per diaper
Size 125 cents
Size 228 cents
Size 328 cents
Size 432 cents
Size 536 cents
Size 642 cents

That works out at an average of 32 cents per diaper. I love that the company makes it super clear when you’re ordering how much you’re gonna pay per diaper. It makes it easy to compare prices.

Honest Diapers Subscription

Honest Diapers Subcription

How it works

Honest diapers are made without chlorine, phthalates, fragrances, and lotions, so that’s a good start when it comes to toxins we should avoid. They’re made with a wood pulp core, but the brand doesn’t state what percentage of plant-based materials is used. And it looks like the rest is made with petroleum-based plastics. These diapers feature a secure fit and ‘True Absorb Core’, which the brand says holds 17 times its weight in fluid. So if that doesn’t do the trick, I don’t know what will.

It’s pretty simple to subscribe to Jessica Alba’s eco-friendly diaper service, and you can also buy single packs if you’d prefer. Unlike Hello Bello and Abby & Finn, who offer a subscription to their diapers only, it looks like you have to subscribe to Honest diapers and wipes to get them delivered regularly and to your door.

Simply select the size you need, choose your preferred diaper prints (their cute designs are really what’s gained them a cult following), followed by your diaper wipe prints. Subscribing to this service will save you 17% on all shipments, and you can choose to have them delivered every 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, or 12 weeks. It’s easy to amend or cancel your subscription online if you find you have too many or too few diapers and wipes.

Shipping is free when you spend $50 or more.

Cost: It’s difficult to work out the cost per diaper with Honest’s subscription, as you get both diapers and wipes. Subscribing to their service will set you back $79.95, for which you’ll get 7 diaper packs (there’s a different number of diapers in each pack depending on the size you choose) and 4 packs of wipes. If you bought these products individually, it’d cost $96.45, so it’s a pretty good saving.

It’s a lot easier to work out the cost per diaper by looking at the price of single packs. Here’s a breakdown.

SizeCost per diaper
Size 131 cents
Size 234 cents
Size 341 cents
Size 448 cents
Size 555 cents
Size 661 cents

That works out at an average of 45 cents per diaper, so quite a lot more than Hello Bello and Abby & Finn.

The Bottom Line: Hello Bello vs Honest vs Abby & Finn Subscriptions

Both Hello Bello and Abby & Finn offer comparable subscription services. You get a freebie product with both brands, and the chance to save money on their other products, like wipes, body care and vitamins. The cost is pretty similar too, although you will generally pay slightly more for Hello Bello diapers.

Honest’s subscription is a little more complicated. It looks like you have to subscribe to both diapers and wipes to access savings and regular delivery. You can save money this way, but if you don’t need wipes, it’s kinda pointless. Buying single packs of Honest is an option, of course, but they’re more expensive: 45 cents on average.

I like that Abby & Finn’s service is super flexible; you can choose how frequently you have your bundle delivered, which is great for the ever-changing diaper needs for your baby! But really, there’s not much between Abby & Finn and Hello Bello. Both offer a fuss-free delivery of non-toxic, eco-friendly diapers straight to your door.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hello Bello Diapers

1. Are Hello Bello diapers worth it?

Considering Hello Bello diapers are made with some plant-based materials and are non-toxic, their price tag is pretty good. Premium skin-friendly diapers can cost anything up to 80 cents each, and Hello Bello diapers cost 38 cents on average. It makes sense that Hello Bello diapers are more affordable than some similar brands; one of the motivations for Kristen Bell when she founded the company was being able to offer parents a great, safe diaper at an affordable price.

That being said, it’s a huge shame that the company doesn’t state the percentage of plant-based materials used in their diapers. They claim to have the planet in mind, but it looks like the only plant-based part of the diaper is the core. Hello Bello diapers simply don’t compare to truly eco-friendly brands like Ecoriginals and Dyper, but they’re arguably better than brands like Pampers and Huggies, as the majority of their varieties use harmful toxins and no plant-based materials at all.

That being said, they are of course more expensive than the cheapest, budget-friendly diapers like Luvs and Mama Bear. But if you do have the budget and you’re looking for safe diapers for your baby, Hello Bello diapers are definitely worth giving a go.

2. Hello Bello vs Honest Diapers: Which is better?

Hello Bello and Honest diapers have a lot in common: both brands were founded by uber-famous actresses, offer non-toxic diapers, make their diapers with some plant-based materials and both offer a subscription service. So how do you choose between them?

In terms of their friendliness to the planet, both are pretty on par. Honest diapers and Hello Bello diapers both avoid chlorine bleaching and use some wood pulp, although we don’t know how much. It’s a shame that both diapers appear to be made mainly with petroleum-based plastics.

It really comes down to cost, especially considering both diapers have generally pretty great reviews. Hello Bello pride themselves on being affordable quality, so how does this compare with Honest?

SizeHello Bello – Cost per diaperHonest – Cost per diaper
127 cents31 cents
227 cents34 cents
334 cents41 cents
440 cents48 cents
546 cents55 cents
655 cents61 cents

While Hello Bello diapers cost an average of 38 cents per diaper, Honest diapers work out at an average of 45 cents. It might not seem like a big difference, but Honest’s higher prices would add up over time.

Hello Bello clearly wins on price and should provide plenty of absorption and comfort for your little one. But if you’re finding that Hello Bello diapers don’t cut it for overnights, Honest produces special overnight diapers, so it might be worth giving them a go.

I wonder which A-list celeb’ll be the next founder of an eco-friendly diaper company.

3. Hello Bello vs Pampers: Which is better?

Pampers is a pretty big hitter in the world of diapers. The biggest hitter, arguably. You’d be completely forgiven for thinking that brands like these because they’re so popular, are completely safe. But the ingredients in diapers aren’t as regulated as they should be, allowing companies to use nasty stuff like phthalates and fragrances when these have the potential to harm our little ones’ health.

Since Pampers doesn’t tell us that they avoid toxins like chlorine, phthalates, and lotions, it’s safe to assume they’re used, in the majority of their varieties at least. Dyes that contain heavy metals also seem to make an appearance, along with no eco-friendly credentials apart from in their Pure Protection variety. So it’s pretty clear that, while Pampers might be effective at keeping the pee and poop at bay, they’re not the healthiest diapers for your baby, or for the planet.

Hello Bello diapers, on the other hand, do go some way to making diapers safer for our little ones’ sensitive skin. Their toxin-free diapers are much better for our little ones than some popular disposable diaper brands, and make at least some effort to utilize plant-based materials. Plus, they’re way cuter than Pampers.

More on this topic: Disposable Diapers: What Are They Made From, And Are They Safe?

4. Hello Bello vs Huggies: Which is better?

Huggies offers similar varieties to Pampers. The majority of their diapers contain chlorine, phthalates, and fragrances, and, apart from their Special Delivery diapers, no varieties boast any kind of eco-credentials. It’s such a shame that big brands like Huggies and Pampers, who clearly make huge profits, don’t make more of an effort to offer skin and planet-healthy products.

So, again, Hello Bello wins out. Obviously.

5. Are Hello Bello diapers safe?

Hello Bello diapers are one of the better diapers on the market in terms of safety for your baby. They avoid major toxins and use some plant-based materials. The rest of their diaper is made with petroleum-based plastics though.

6. Does Kristen Bell own Hello Bello?

Kristen Bell and her husband Dax Shepard are two of the founders and co-owners of Hello Bello. Yes, the same Kristen Bell who star’s in the hit TV show ‘The Good Place’ and the even bigger hit film ‘Frozen’. I’m not sure where she got the time to set up a diaper company, but I’m glad she did…

Kristen and Dax have two daughters, and the company was born out of wanting to offer parents an affordable skin-friendly diaper. You’ll see Kristen and Dax in a lot of Hello Bello’s marketing materials, so it looks like they’re involved in the running of things.

7. What are the safest diapers for babies?

The safest diapers for babies are those which avoid toxins like phthalates, fragrances, lotions, and dyes made with heavy metals. Exposure to phthalates has been linked to increased rates of asthma, eczema, and abnormal genital development, while the term ‘fragrances’ can be used by diaper companies to cover up a bunch of nasty chemicals in their diapers.

Added lotions are another needless ingredient, and they have the potential to cause skin rashes, as do inks and dyes made with heavy metals. There’s no wonder diaper companies don’t put this stuff on the packaging!

So how do you know which brands don’t use these toxins? A good rule of thumb is unless a diaper company very clearly states that a toxin isn’t used in their ingredients, it’s safe to assume that it is. Big brands like Pampers and Huggies appear to use phthalates, fragrances, and lotions in the majority of their varieties, but there are so many smaller brands paving the way for safe diapers, like Hello Bello, Abby & Finn, and Dyper. Check out my favorite non-toxic diaper picks for more inspiration!

8. Are Hello Bello diapers good for sensitive skin?

Because Hello Bello diapers don’t use potential irritants like fragrances, lotions and phthalates, they’re hypoallergenic, so suitable for babies with sensitive skin. When looking for the best diapers for little ones with sensitive skin, less is definitely more!

Related Post: Best Hypoallergenic Diapers For Babies With Sensitive Skin

9. What diapers do Hello Bello compare to?

If you’re looking for non-toxic diapers that are safer for your baby than the average disposable, but a little cheaper than Hello Bello, Mama Gentle Touch diapers are where it’s at. Free from the main toxins like phthalates and fragrances, these diapers will only set you back about 16 cents each. Plus, they’re made in a zero-waste-to-landfill facility. They’re not made from plant-based materials like Hello Bello though, which is probably why they’re cheaper.

Honest and Abby & Finn diapers provide something pretty similar to Hello Bello, with Honest diapers being slightly more expensive, and Abby & Finn a little cheaper. All three brands use some plant-based materials and steer clear of toxins, so they’re better choices than brands like Pampers. They all offer subscription services too, so diapers will be one less thing to stress about!

While Hello Bello does make some effort to minimize its impact on the planet, there’s a type of diaper that goes even further. Biodegradable diapers are plant-based, usually completely toxin-free, and can be composted instead of heading straight to a landfill. Considering about 20 billion diapers end up in landfills yearly, with each taking anything up to 500  years to decompose, biodegradable diapers are an amazing eco-friendly alternative. Companies like Dyper, Andy Pandy, and Dewor are pioneers in compostable diapers, and they’re showing the big companies just how it should be done. Let’s hope they take note!

10. What else does Hello Bello make?

Hello Bello doesn’t just make diapers. Kristen and Dax have been very busy bees, and the brand now offers everything from kid’s vitamins to hand sanitizer! They have a wide range of baby and child care products, like balms and diaper creams, as well as baby powders and hair products. And your home isn’t forgotten, with plant-based laundry detergent and handwash too. They even sell sunscreen and bug spray for those holidays and adventures that we all used to go on pre-lockdown. Let’s hope we’ll need them again soon.

Hello Bello diapers: The good, the bad and the bottom line

Now we’ve taken a very good look at Hello Bello diapers, what’s the good, the bad, and the bottom line?

The GoodThe Bad
◆ Free of phthalates
◆ Free of chlorine
◆ Free of fragrances
◆ Free of lotions
◆ Made with some plant-based ingredients
◆ Super absorbent
◆ Cute prints
◆ Hypoallergenic
◆ Smaller sizes have a wetness indicator
◆ They offer both diapers and training pants
◆ They offer a bunch of natural baby, home, and vitamin products
◆ Their subscription service is great for busy parents and carers
◆ The subscription service is flexible
◆ They’re one of the cheaper non-toxic diaper brands
Their packaging doubles up as a fun play-thing for kids!
◆ They have largely positive reviews
◆ They’re not biodegradable
◆ They don’t state the percentage of plant-based materials used
◆ They use petroleum-based plastic
◆ They’re available at their own site, Walmart and CVS only

The bottom line

Okay, so I love that Hello Bello diapers stay away from harmful toxins like phthalates. And there’s no denying they’re super cute, convenient, and better for our little ones than their big brand counterparts like Pampers and Huggies. Non-toxic is the way to go when it comes to looking after our babies and their very sensitive, delicate skin.

Hello Bello is clearly achieving their mission: to offer affordable products that are great for your baby. But they fall short on their commitment to the planet. While their core is made of wood pulp, the brand doesn’t tell us the percentage of plant materials used, and it looks like the rest of the diaper is plastic. Of course, the price does seem to reflect this, with gold-standard eco diapers tending to be a little more expensive.

Let’s hope that, as demand increases for non-toxic diapers and genuinely eco-friendly diapers, prices will continue to come down. If global brands finally take note, it might be sooner than we think.
