Everything you need to know about Amazon Mama Bear Diapers

What Company makes Mama Bear diapers?

Mama Bear diapers are actually Amazon’s own brand of diapers. This means that they’re only available online, but a great and convenient option for moms, dads, and carers! Especially if you have Amazon prime, which means you can get them on a next-day delivery. You’ll never have to do a last-minute dash to the grocery store for diapers again!

Mama Bear Diapers Ingredients

It’s more important than ever to take note of what ingredients and materials are used in diapers. After all, they’re touching our babies’ skin, all day every day. We want to make sure there’s nothing potentially harmful hidden in the production of our diapers. This is even more important if your baby has sensitive skin (check out my article on the best diapers for sensitive skin for more information!). You’ll need to stay away from diapers with added fragrances if your little one’s skin is sensitive, as these could irritate them. And, generally, it’s best to stay away from any diapers with added chlorine as this is potentially harmful to your baby.

There are actually two types of Amazon Mama Bear Diapers: Plush Protection and Gentle Touch.

Both their Gentle Touch and Plush Protection diapers fare pretty well in the non-toxic stakes, with Gentle Touch steering clear of chlorine bleaching, perfumes, lotions, parabens, and phthalates, and Plush Protection diapers being free of latex, lotions, fragrances, and elemental chlorine bleaching.

Plush Protection Diapers

  • Elemental Chlorine Bleaching

Their Plush Protection diapers are also hypoallergenic, so suitable for little ones with sensitive skin. They feature breathable, soft, and stretchy fabric for a snug and secure fit.

Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers are also hypoallergenic and, unlike the Plush Protection variety, are completely free from chlorine bleaching and phthalates. Not quite sure what phthalates are? Let me explain…

Essentially, phthalates are used in all sorts of household items, from vinyl flooring and wall covering to cosmetics and children’s toys. Some studies have shown that long-term exposure to this chemical could increase the likelihood of eczema and asthma in little ones and even affect genital development in boys. Suffice to say, it’s something to stay away from if you can!

Mama Bear Plush Protection don’t state outright that they’re free from phthalates, so Gentle Touch diapers definitely win in the chemical stakes!

Are mama bear diapers eco-friendly? Are they biodegradable?

Unfortunately, it’s safe to say that neither varieties of Mama Bear diapers are biodegradable. If buying eco-friendly diapers is a priority for you, check out my article on the top biodegradable diapers, where I review disposable diapers that are great for baby’s skin, and also great for the world around us!

The good news is that Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers are produced in a ‘zero waste to landfill facility’. This essentially means that the waste produced during the production of the diapers is not sent to landfills and, instead, if reused or recycled. Plus, if this wasn’t enough, they state that they’re cruelty-free, so not tested on animals. This is fantastic news for parents and carers who are looking for diapers that do their part in minimizing their impact on the world!

Mama Bear’s Plush Protection diapers are made with the sustainably sourced pulp, but it doesn’t state the percentage used. It’s safe to say, therefore, that Mama Bear diapers are made predominantly with petroleum-based plastic. Unlike brands like Ecoriginals and Dyper, who use high percentages of plant-based materials in their diapers, Mama Bear doesn’t boast anything near as impressive. It’s great that they’re produced in a ‘zero waste to landfill facility’ and use some plant-based materials, but that’s just not enough…

How well do Mama Bear Diapers work?

Plush Protection Diapers

a pack of plush protection diapers

Plush Protection diapers offer leakage protection for up to 12 hours, which is great peace of mind for moms, dads, and carers, as well as a wetness indicator. They feature premier tri-grip tabs and an elastic waistband for a secure fit, while allowing the baby the comfort and flexibility to crawl, play and discover!

They’re made with super absorbent material, for effectively wicking away moisture and keeping baby dry and feature a ‘Full Protect’ core, made with sustainably-sourced pulp. Amazon says that their diapers are plush and gentle on your little one’s skin. The brand says their Plush Protection diapers are hypoallergenic, so they’re suitable for little ones who have particularly sensitive skin.

Gentle Touch Diapers

Like Mama Bear’s Plush Protection diapers, their Gentle Touch diapers offer up to 12 hours of leakage protection, and also feature a wetness indicator to show when a little one needs a change.

They offer a thin design, which means they’re flexible enough for your baby to feel comfortable and explore to their heart’s content. A breathable outer cover ensures your little one’s skin remains healthy and dry and they’re so confident of the diaper’s performance that they offer a satisfaction guarantee: they’ll refund you within a year of your purchase if you’re not completely happy. So they’re certainly putting their money where their mouth is!

Where can I buy mama bear diapers?

Mama Bear diapers are available on Amazon, so they’re certainly a convenient option. Whether you want to purchase them as needed or want them delivered to your door regularly, they’re perfect for moms, dads, and carers with busy lives!

You can of course purchase them as and when you need them, but a great option to help you get the most bang for your buck is the Amazon Family program. This offers Prime members family offers and coupons on items you buy every day for your little one, as well as a great 20% off diapers and baby food subscriptions. We all know how expensive diapers can be, especially with the number of diapers little ones can get through, so this saving is pretty significant, no matter what your budget!

How much do Mama Bear Diapers cost?

Another huge bonus with Mama Bear diapers is the cost. While diapers can cost anything up to 80 cents per diaper (and more!), the cost of Mama Bear Plush Protection diapers varies depending on the size you need, from around 18 cents per diaper (size 1) to 52 cents per diaper (size 7).  In terms of their Gentle Touch diapers, they’re even better value, at around 16 cents per diaper (size 2) to 37 cents per diaper (size 7)!

Compared to many other similar brands on the market, this is actually a fantastic price, so great for those on a budget. And with the Amazon Family Program, which can save you 20% on diaper subscriptions, you’ll bag even more of a bargain!

What do the reviews say?

Plush Protection Diapers

a pack of plush protection diapers

Plush Protection is a super new variety of Mama Bear diapers, so finding reviews for them is tricky. In fact, at the time of writing this, I found a single solitary review. It gave the diapers 4 out of 5 stars and the reviewer said she doesn’t think this variety is softer than Gentle Touch. She also points out that Plush Protection don’t appear to be phthalate-free, unlike Mama Bear’s Gentle Touch diapers.

Gentle Touch Diapers

Again, Amazon’s Gentle Touch diapers have certainly been tried and tested, averaging 4.2 out of 5 in over 1900 reviews! Again, this average rating isn’t quite as high as some other similar brands on the market, but the majority of reviews are positive.

Users say that they’re noticeably thinner than other brands, but still soft on the skin. Others comment that they’re super absorbent and are even effective overnight. Some reviewers say they come up small, so it might be worth considering sizing up for your little one.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mama Bear Diapers

1.Are mama bear diapers chlorine free?

Something to consider when purchasing the right diapers for your baby is the presence of chlorine. Diapers might describe themselves as either ‘elemental chlorine-free’ or ‘totally chlorine-free’. While totally chlorine-free is the better option, elemental chlorine-free bleaching means that, even though the diaper isn’t necessarily completely free of chlorine, the process reduces its toxicity. This means that elementally chlorine-free, which is what Mama Bear Plush Protection diapers describe themselves as is much safer for the environment than conventional bleaching.

Their Gentle Touch diapers, on the other hand, state they’re free of chlorine bleaching, so they’re clearly a better choice when it comes to finding a more natural diaper.

2. Are Mama Bear Diapers good for the environment?

Mama Bear Plush Protection diapers use fluff pulp in their core, but it looks like this is the only bit of the diaper that contains plant-based materials. It doesn’t look like this variety of diapers can boast any other eco-credentials, unfortunately.

The best disposable diapers for the planet are biodegradable. But Mama Bear diapers certainly aren’t biodegradable and, in fact, are made predominantly with plastics.

On the other hand, whilst Gentle Touch diapers don’t seem to be biodegradable, they are completely cruelty-free, so not tested on animals, and produced in a zero waste to landfill facility. This means that waste produced when making the diapers is reused or recycled, rather than sent straight to landfill!

3. Does Amazon have a diaper brand?

Amazon does indeed have its own brand of diapers – Mama Bear diapers! This means that they’re only available on Amazon.com and not in the grocery store, but with more and more of us purchasing our everyday essentials online, it’s actually a great and convenient way to ensure you always have enough! Their Amazon Family service will even save you 20% on diaper subscriptions, and because they’re already very budget-friendly, they’re perfect for those of us watching the pennies.

4. Are Mama Bear Diapers Natural?

‘Eco-friendly’, ‘natural’ and ‘biodegradable’ are all very popular buzzwords right now when it comes to choosing the best diapers for your baby. A diaper might describe itself as natural if it uses plant-based materials like bamboo, which is a common material in many brands.

Amazon’s Mama Bear Plush Protection diapers aren’t forthcoming with their ingredients lists, and don’t boast of any plant-based or ‘natural’ materials being used in their manufacturing aside from a fluff pulp core. They are hypoallergenic, however, so safe for little ones with sensitive skin.

Gentle Touch diapers fare better in the ‘natural’ stakes, being hypoallergenic and free from chlorine bleaching, perfumes, lotions, parabens and phthalates. So while they’re not made with a high percentage of plant-based or ‘naturally derived’ materials, as far as we know, they’re gentler on baby’s skin – as the name suggests!

5. Does Amazon make any other Mama Bear baby products?

Amazon’s brand of baby products – Mama Bear – doesn’t just produce diapers. In fact, they offer diaper pail refills, Gentle Baby Laundry Detergent, organic baby food, sippy cups, pacifiers, reusable snack bags, feeders and loads more! But I don’t wanna keep you here all day…

6. Are Mama Bear Diapers Discontunued?

a pack of best fit

Amazon used to offer a Mama Bear diaper variety called Best Fit. It now looks like they’ve been discontinued, and replaced with Mama Bear Plush Protection. One of the big differences between their old Best Fit diapers and this variety is that Plush Protection diapers use some sustainably sourced wood pulp. It doesn’t state how much though, so don’t be tricked into thinking these diapers are green!

You can still buy Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers from Amazon, and from Diaper Dabbler.

7. Mama Bear Diapers vs Huggies vs Pampers

Mama Bear is a hugely popular brand amongst parents and carers, as are Huggies and Pampers. But how do they compare? Which brand is better for your baby, and which brand is better for the environment?

Shockingly, despite Pampers and Huggies being the biggest diaper brands in the world, they both produce only one variety of diaper that uses plant-based materials – Pampers Pure Protection and Huggies Special Delivery.

The majority of their varieties are made predominantly with plastics and contain a whole host of chemicals and toxins that are no good for your baby. And Pampers Pure Protection might use some plant-based material, but it doesn’t say how much.

In terms of toxicity and price, Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers win hands-down. They’re free of phthalates and are super budget-friendly at 19 cents each (for size 3).

The fact that Mama Bear diapers beat the best of Pampers and Huggies tells you everything you need to know…

Of course, biodegradable diapers that use a high percentage of plant-based materials, like Dyper, Ecoriginals, and Andy Pandy, are the gold medal winners!

8. Are Mama Bear Diapers Non-toxic?

Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers are completely free of the main toxin culprits often found in disposable diapers, including phthalates, lotions, fragrances, and heavy metal dyes. While they’re non-toxic, they’re still made with petroleum-based plastics, so they might be better for your baby’s skin, but they’re not the best diapers for the planet.

Mama Bear Plush Protection diapers are free of fragrances and lotions, but there’s no word on phthalates, so I have to assume they’re used!

9. Is there a Mama Bear diapers trial?

custom-diaper-dabbler-sampler

Many diaper brands offer free or low-cost trial packs of their diapers. After all, every baby is different and so are their diaper needs! Although Amazon doesn’t offer a trial of Mama Bear diapers, you can try them using one of my favorite sites: Diaper Dabbler

Diaper Dabbler is a site that offers diaper bundles, made up of different brands. It lets parents and carers test different brands out before committing to big packs. Mama Bear Gentle Touch diapers are available in their Modest Mama Diaper Variety Package, Prepared Parent Diaper Variety Package and Size 1 Custom Diaper Variety Package.

What are some alternatives to Mama Bear Diapers?

Hypoallergenic alternatives

a box of Dyper Diapers

If you’re looking for other hypoallergenic diaper brands, Dyper is one of my top picks for affordability when it comes to similar brands on the market. Completely free of harsh toxins and chemicals and made from bamboo, they’re perfect for babies with sensitive skin. Check out my hypoallergenic diaper top picks for more suggestions!

Biodegradable alternatives

a pack of Ecoriginals Diapers

One of my top choices for parents looking for eco-friendly alternatives is the brand Ecoriginals. While they’re disposable, they’re made with sustainably sourced wood pulp and unbleached cotton, for great absorbency. At around 48-63 cents per diaper, depending on the size you need, they’re not exactly cheap, but completely worth it if you have the budget. My article on biodegradable diapers features loads of alternatives when it comes to eco-friendly options for your little one!

Budget alternatives

While it certainly costs more to get set up with reusable diapers, it can save you a heck of a lot of money in the long run. Rather than having to buy pack after pack of diapers, cloth diapers can be reused again and again, saving you money and saving the planet from the extra landfills! It’s a big adjustment if you’re used to using disposables only, but if you’re on a budget, it’s a great option.

Gro Via O.N.E diapers are one of my favorites, and they’re even good for overnight wear. At around 23 dollars per diaper, while this sounds expensive, a couple of hundred dollars will set you up and save you lots of money in the long run. Buying reusable diapers for your little one from newborn to toddler definitely isn’t cheap! Have a read of my best overnight diapers article, especially if your baby is a heavy wetter.
